ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands (VI) has received a much needed facelift on the inside and was almost ready today June 15, 2016 when the VI Youth Parliament held its evening session to debate a motion on implementing measures to ensure transparency in the process of public expenditure.

However, many are wondering aloud when the adults meet on June 23, 2016 if the newly spruced up area will mean anything to Members’ behaviour.

HoA at an all time low

The House of Assembly is at an all-time low, with the public regarding it as a ‘joke’ and one former Legislator and National Democratic Party mouthpiece describing it as a “circus.”

Since the 2011 General Elections, the HoA has been used as a vehicle to play politics, insult residents, tell lies about citizens' character, go after businesses politicians do not like, members disrespecting each other and for some Ministers to make false statements, all under the privilege of not facing legal actions.

We can only hope that when the HoA meets again on June 23, 2016 the new overhaul of the physical space will also contribute to serious debates, high standards and weighty discourse that can help move the people and the country forward.

Moreover, it is hoped the HoA will become a place where the youths debating in its halls today June 15, 2016 will truly aspire to be, and that it will become a place where country will be first and not petty, small-minded partisan politics.

Meanwhile, the cost of the works to the HoA is not immediately known, as the building is also shared with the Courts.
