ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A host of changes have been proposed for the soon to be revamped BVI Technical and Vocational Institute that, among other things, seek to better prepare students for the job market in the Virgin Islands.

Principal at the institution, Ms Germain Scatliffe, who made the disclosure during a public meeting at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall on February 18, 2014, said the school’s vision is to become a centre of excellence for the development of a more technically skilled workforce.

She further stated that the school’s mission is to provide Technical Vocational Training and authentic certification in the Virgin Islands, regionally and internationally.

The school will begin with four programmes, namely Hospitality, Catering and Tourism; Cosmetology; Construction; and Engineering with a focus on Auto Mechanics.

Subjects being taught in the three year programme include English Language, Mathematics, Social Science, Science, Information Technology Customer Service, Entrepreneurship and Vocation. There will also be apprenticeship training at various agencies.

“We intend that this institution will be the Fourth secondary school in the Territory offering Techincal and vocational studies,” she added.

Admission is open to any public secondary school student successfully completing Form Three (Grade 9) and also to private secondary school students successfully completing Form Three (Grade 9). However, an application must be made to the Department of Education if the student is a non-national.

I have to laugh at all the negativity in the face of progression in education. What can be negative about finally getting a Technical Program that's certified and pushed as a proper institution and not a dumping ground for 'bad' students.

@LOL there is negativity because the society don't trust the people representing them. This is the reality.
