ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton said that while fees for the Peebles Hospital will be increased it means that no one will be denied service as the overall infrastructure will be improved.

He was speaking last night November 3, 2014 on National Democratic Party Radio heard on ZBVI 780 AM in response to a caller who posed a question.

“I have a question for the Premier or Mr Skelton,” began the female caller. “I understand the fees for the hospital are going up?” she asked.

“I understand it is going up three times the amount it used to be. I am thinking of a person like myself who don’t work and you carrying it up [that high]. I don’t have a problem with you carrying it up. My problem is the [size of the increase]. You could carry it up but not that much,” lamented the caller.

In response, Hon Skelton said, “Yes caller…the fees for the hospital are going up. One of the conditions for the fees going up is that no one will be denied care.”

He said that if there are cases where persons are being denied care he wants to know about them.

“The whole idea is for us to be able to pay for the level of service that our people so need instead of just giving the basic service. It is to improve the level of care for people and improve the whole infrastructure for health care at the hospital,” he said.

In addition to Hon Skelton, on the show were other Government Ministers, including Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon D. Orlando Smith, Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn, Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr the Hon Kedrick D. Pickering, and Minister for Communications and Works Hon Mark H. Vanterpool.

we pay very little tax so how do you expect the Government to run the hospital without increasing fees? You think the VIP would be able to do it any differently? They would need income from somewhere

The worst is yet to come with yet another money making scheme to tax the people of the Virgin Islands.

This is ridiculous Ronnie. BVI is too small to use American methods but what is in the dark will soon come to light.

All things will come to an end. Our politicians in power are following the US Republicans but they better make shure they have guts to bear what comes after. Stop taking advantage of Virgin Islanders. Take care of your own before taking care of others.. Right now the cart is leading the horse.

I am aware that medical expenses are rising everywhere. My concern is for the person that is making $800.00 a month, has to pay rent which is not regulated and must feed him one herself and at times is responsible for providing for a family. Cost of living has gone up,children are going to school hungry. We have more doctors and nurses here in the Virgin Islands per patient that everywhere that I haveresided. Yet the service is lousy. There is a total lack of confidentiality at the hospital. Management is overpaid. Government needs to insure that highly paid administrators are are functional. Sometimes there is a need to check thoroughly where these Managers have previously worked to see for ourselves what their track record were before bringing them here only to realize down atheroad that weave paid highly I and a the returns were ineffective. This is the British side of the Virgin Islands, this is not America a decant replicateAmerica which has had reuses and polices in place. Our culture is different and these issues need tobe addressed. Healthcare cannot be fixed by persons who don't have a inkling of what they are doing and who are not open to suggestions and advice. We an build a new hospital, we can have all the locked doors, we can hire all the doctors and nurses that we want and nothing will improve if we are close minded ann blind.

Time for NDP to go! Fees to go up to pay exorbitant salaries to unqualified "executives" and children referred from that Duff's Bottom Institution.

    Streeups

For a party that consistently fails to make good financial decisions, its is indeed amazing how they continue to believe they can ever win the next elections

As bad as you think that the NDP Party is, use your head and remember the past inactivity of the llast government. At least projects have moved forward and we can still see works in progress. This government problem is that it's members are arrogant and appears to know what is best for everyone. Quite frankly the same can be said for theVIP. When all is said and done this government is comprised of more educated persons than the last
