Honour Roll cultivating positive competition at St. George's School
The initiative was introduced by the school’s administration at the beginning of the 2012–2013 academic school year and already for the second term students have shown almost 50% improvement above the 1st term with the number making it on to the Honour Roll. To qualify for the Honour Roll a student has to obtain an overall percentage of 78 and over and to get on to the Principal’s List 90% and over. The first term saw 20 students making the Honour Roll with two of them additionally hitting the grades for the Principal’s List.
The following term for which they were honored today, 27 students made the Honour Roll and the same two students maintaining their grades to remain on the Principal’s List. Chris-Tiann Roberts recorded an average 92.3% and Emmanuel Borokinni 90.5% to maintain their top positions.
The border line set by St George's School as the pass grade is 60% and of a student population of approximately 112, 10 fell below the set grade point average. The school also boast a qualified teacher population of 14.
To assist students who fall below the border line, a study hour is be implement to give them a supervised opportunity at spending extra time at studying especially on their weak areas.
Noting that "quite" a number of students narrowly missed the Honour Roll this term, “I am really sorry those students didn’t make the grades this term but it shows that they are taking their studies very seriously and will continue to push harder to ensure that they get on the Roll comfortably for the next school term,” said the school’s Principal Ms Beverley J. Hinds-Callwood.
While in the capacity as teacher at the school last year, the now Principal Ms Hinds-Callwood said that she had recognized the need for the children to have more competition, “I know that there are pros and cons when it comes to having competition but I believe that there are more pros than they are cons and especially at a private school parents want to see their children excelling academically and otherwise.”
The students were honoured and presented with certificates this morning May 3, 2013 at the School’s Hannah’s Estate location at a simple ceremony where they were further motivated by their teachers, Principal and special guest to the ceremony- the Chairman of the school's Board of Directors, Mr Gerard Farara Q.C.
Mr Farara said his presence at the ceremony was particularly to say a few words of encouragement to those students who did not make the Honour Roll this time around. “I encouraged them to re-commit themselves to the task of education and improving themselves so ultimately they too can achieve the grades which they would have applied themselves and ultimately their parents too would like for them.” said Mr Farara.
