ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Arguing that ownership of land is part and parcel of the state and economic control of the economy of the Virgin Islands, Education Minister Hon Myron V. Walwyn said Virgin Islanders need to be vigilant that they do not lose ownership of their lands.

Hon Walwyn was speaking at the Territory Day Celebration held in the compound of Central Administration Complex on July 1, 2016 under the theme: Our Story: The Independent Spirit of Our People.

Quoting some words from the late attorney Dr J.S. Archibald QC, who ‘The BVI is a country that values land because land ownership in the BVI is a matter of culture. It is a matter of basic culture and culture is always a decider in vital issues of life of an individual or country…’ Hon Walwyn added that land is a basis of freedom not law.

“While we fight each other at times, when we are busy envying each other at times, while we are buying cars and clothes, there are those here in the Virgin Islands buying nothing but land. They are better connected, they are better organised and they have greater access to cash than we have. There needs to be a reawakening of that independent spirit to ensure that the ownership of land and property remains firmly in the hands of Virgin Islanders,” Hon Walwyn stated.

The controversial minister of government also said the business opportunities to Virgin Islanders must also be in the hands of the people of the VI, explaining that whoever owns the businesses and the economic engines of a society will also have the power to determine the makeup of the society and ultimately have influence over politics and the direction of the society.

“Our reawakening would require us to be unapologetic in certain areas,” Mr Walwyn said, adding that if there is any business “where we have the financial resources and the human resources to operate in this territory it should be done by us.”

“Whether it be the supermarket business or the construction business, once the competency and the financial resources are available it should be done by our people. I say it is time for a reawakening of the independent spirit of the Virgin Islander.”

Hon Walwyn being hypocritical again?

It was in April of this year in the House of Assembly that Minister for Education and Culture and Territorial At Large Representative, Hon Myron V. Walwyn, who already declared that locals can no longer be protected, made a 360 turn suddenly claiming that he was now “fighting for locals.”

The controversial Minister told the public that he will fight any proposal put forward that may not be in the interest of local companies- referring to the pending sale of Road Town Wholesale (RTW).

He said “we cannot allow certain companies to come into the Virgin Islands here with all their money and take over what we have here and put all those local businesses-those small stores out of business,” he told the HoA.

But persons have accused Hon Walwyn of being hypocritical, after allegedly selling his law firm, Orion Law, to another in a merger deal with international law firm based in the Cayman Islands, Travers Thorp Alberga.

Britons didn't care about VI while voting out of EU

Hon Walwyn also sounded the call for an independent Virgin Islands in speaking about Brexit, saying UK voters made a decision out of emotion and fears of migration issues but never did consider how the vote to leave the European Union would have affected the Overseas Territories, including the Virgin Islands.

He said the relation with Britain and the OTs have been beneficial to the VI but “here we have a decision being made thousands of miles away based on emotions and cynicism, that has such a profound effect on our little territory in the Caribbean archipelago.”

“Do you think that while they voted in that referendum they thought about us here in the Virgin Islands? Do you think they thought about how it would affect us here in the Virgin Islands? Do you think they thought about how being in the EU benefitted our economy? I say again it is time for the reawakening of the independent spirit of the Virgin Islander.”

Hon Walwyn also suggested a change from the name Territory Day to Virgin Islands Day.

You'd think the BVI luminaries depicted in the picture would show some leadership by being able to recite the pledge without using their notes....

All this man is doing is blowing hot air. Independence? You think going towards independent here is an ABC matter, we will be making an even more grave decision than the UK people made. There is a lot to be taken into consideration before we even bring about the talk of independence. So the talk is just cheap.

These guys are but two legged contradictions on to themselves (one leg going right and the other going left). Believe nothing they say and only 1/4 of what they do…the remaining 3/4 is pure gravy for the various pockets.

The junior minister who lives west end have been sell land for year: some of us have independence as a joke matter; this territory enjoys global benefits because we are affiliated with the United Kingdom: independence is far more that a conversation; which one of them that sits in electoral office truly understand global affairs: BVI can't even make it into CARICOM....independent is a good thing; its like leave your mother's house now out on your own( then comes those bills and having to pay for stuff on your own)

I will not waste my time to listen to Min. Walyn. Whatever he said is emptyness. What he should do is to tell the students who he prevented from graduating at the high school that he has robbed them of one year progress in their education. He should visit the St.Georges and Seventh Day Adventist high school and see the level of acaedemic performance and introduce the same system at the government high schools instead of wasting the student's time.

The No.1 Criteria for Independence. "Defence--Defence" How would we afford to put the defence independence require in place to defend this country and the people in it from inside and outside aggression. That will be hundreds of millions added to our budget..That's hurdle one... Hurdle 2. The process, Would we have a voting say in the process--Like, should the Prime Minister be voted on separately?
