ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- As a result of decisions finally being made on the terms of introducing Caribbean Examination Counsel (CXC) in the Virgin Islands (VI), Hon. Myron V. Walwyn recently announced, that in the near future all existing secondary teachers would be trained or retrained to manage the preparations of students to write Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) exams.

He added that the present School Leaving Exams (SLE) are not enough to take the students of the VI where they really need to be.

In a speech released by the Minister for Education and Culture in the VI, Hon. Walwyn, he disclosed that the Ministry of Education in collaboration with CXC, is currently in the planning stage to ensure that all Teachers at the secondary level be trained or retrained, in efforts to fulfill a promise made by his Ministry; which was to improve the education offered to the students in the VI and to prepare fifth formers to sit CXC exams in the 2013-2014 school year.

He added that these trainings are scheduled to take place during the upcoming school year.

Hon. Walwyn stated, that despite the fact that many are against the introduction of CXC in the VI because of the presence of the SLE’s, “it is clear that this alone is not enough to take our students forward to the best colleges and universities.”

The Minister added “if all our students are sitting the School Leaving Examinations and doing well, then why shouldn’t they be able to do the CXC examinations and do just as well?”

He informed the students who will be sitting the exams, that in life, education is the only thing that is truly theirs, whereby once it is gained it cannot be taken away.

“Students preparing for CXC examinations may seem like a daunting task, but you have this government, your teachers, your parents and our wider community on your side. Being successful at CXC examinations is a plus; you would have the five CXC/CSEC that employers request; you would have the opportunity to enter tertiary institutions via your CXC results; you would have the opportunity to be compared with the best among the region based on your results.”

In efforts to create a culture of excellence within the education system existing in the VI, Hon. Walwyn encourages teachers, parents and students alike, to take full advantage of CXC and their curriculum.

Hon. Walwyn said that by improving the educational standards in the territory it will further lead to a better Virgin Islands and a better world.

All students and parents have agreed that the CXC is not the best but is better than the school leaving and more recognized than it.

The BVI need CXC so the students can be measured against their peers across the region. School leaving is not of much value if the students do well and when they go to univsersity there are not up to snuff. Born Here reality !

This man is degrading our teachers ability, OMG! His kids only attend private schools BVI look at the broad picture. CXC is good but this minister behaves as though he's the Premier and Deputy.

Why all the negativity for the new Minister, if you were not in the kitchen as a teacher to feel the heat especially if you are not a vip then you need to stop talking what you dont know. F***e has been running education like a dictatorship without much care, dont visit the schools dont interact with the teachers to find out what are their likes or dislikes nothing only doing favors for some while others left to hang. I am not going to say everything he did was bad but he only liked to show the public the few good to hide all the dirtyness. Education needs cleaning up after the mess he made. The system had its flaws but he made them worse overall...The new minister has his work cut out for him....

this is needed as the syllabus used to teach is always changing and we as teachers need to be up to speed at all times. There are some who dont know the new material and dont like to admit they dont know therefore the kids are not being taught the information accurately. I applaud this idea....

the poor Minister is trying his best but I know that BVI high schools kids are capable of performing well but the level of teaching falls far below par...now that is where Mr. Walwyn needs to spend some time and effort.

I disagree with you to some degree, teachers can only use the resources given to fullfil their duties and many of us do a great job with what we have and many students are successful so I would not say the level of teaching is far below par. there are many issues with teachers/teaching the minister needs to look at and I think forums in each school would help as each school has thier own difficulties.

THANK GOD, FINALLY I FEEL HOPEFULL THAT MY PRE SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN WILL BE EDUCATED AT A STANDARD COMPARABLE TO THE REST OF THE REGION AND BEYOND. THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS HERE ARE PRODUCTS OF LACK OF PROPER EDUCATION AND PURE IGNORANCE. MYRON AT THE SAME TIME THE PRIMARY SCHOOL EDUCATION NEED A BOOST TOO. GO MYRON DO YOUR THING.
