ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Radio talk show host Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru last evening June 15, 2016 slammed Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn for his insistence on the extra year policy for high school students.

He was speaking on his new talk show ‘Things to Talk’ aired on ZBVI 780 AM from 8:00 pm.

With co-host Julio ‘Sam’ Henry, Wheatley made it clear that he thought the Minister was ill advised regarding the decision.

He said too that the Minister does not have a pulse on the education needs of the territory.

“You have a situation where policymakers have people to advise them. But you have to be sure that you don't have a situation where the policymaker is dictating to the people who are supposed to be advising them and telling them I want you to do this and I want you to do that because this is my view. You can get yourself in trouble like that,” he said.

Noting that the Minister is a very intelligent man, he said that he has not spent a lot of time in the field of education and therefore is lacking in such capacities.

“Some of these decisions have great implications and you have to be well informed in order to make them. He doesn't seem like the kind of person by my estimation who lacks in confidence or who lacks in ability to give direction. He seems like he thrives in giving direction. But before he makes some of the decisions he needs to be better informed in order to make them,” said Wheatley.

Sixth Form programme was rushed

Co-host Henry asked Wheatley whether there was any reason to rush to have the extra year when the physical preparations had not even been completed.

Wheatley, in reply, said that he thought the rush should be in other areas. “There are some urgent situations that need to be sorted out but not adding an additional year. That was not something that was urgently needed,” he said.

Wheatley pointed out that there are some definite problems when it comes to the quality of education and this he said has to do with the quality of the instructions.

He said that much more results oriented measures have to be taken in order to improve the quality of the education being delivered.

“So he has done some things that are good but there are some areas that in great need of attention...I would say reading. Not enough has been done there...not enough has been done to offer support services for students with difficulties and learning disabilities,” he said.

On the extra year decision by Honourable Walwyn, Wheatley said, “I don't think it was  a wise choice.”

Tell them Sowande, he needs to slow down indeed, reassess and adjust accordingly.

The next set we need to expose is all these recycled “Boards and Statutory Boards” who decide who get appointed and who they think deserve certain positions. They too need a good shaking up, possible appointing a more diverse sample of the population. "The God Complex Syndrome." This nonsense in our country needs to stop.

Well! I do not have any children of primary or high school age, but I listened to Mr Wheatley last evening and what he said made absolute sense. The students from the high school go abroad to college and do just as well and sometimes much better than students from other countries. The Curriculum at the high school needs improving to include some things and teaches and principals need to be more strict.

Not only is the emperor wearing no clothes but he's seemed to have lost his toupee as well.

The minister was not ill-advised. The problem with the minister is that his over-inflated ego is bigger than all the limbs on his body combined or any flagpole that may stand outside a building. It's a wonder that he hasn't sunken the centre of the earth how heavy it is. I pity him yet I'm astounded by his strength...and stupidity. Not only did he put the horse before the cart but he also put the foal before the sapling.

Don't get me wrong, I think both parties have good ideas that could bring our country into the 21st century and really uplift the people. The hydroponic greenhouse was a good idea and adding an extra year might not have been so bad if it were done properly and thoughtfully. It seems at though none of the men that lead us know anything about patience and going slow. They start at A and fly straight to Z and damnation to all the letters in between. They keep engaging in non-verbal cockfights with one another, forgetting that there are thousands watching them and waiting for them to be adults. Quite unfortunately, however, the level of humility our minister possesses is smaller than the size of a pinworm. Rather than call a rush graduation and let the children move on, he'd rather continue using them as pawns his game despite being in checkmate. Everyone can see through your charade, minister. Please just end this, it's already painful. Apologies, regroup, re-stratigise and return with something better. You have until 2019, at least leave a cohesive plan and a strong foundation for the next minister to follow.

Please don't tell Mr. Wheatley to stop doing what he is doing. He is one of the very few people who has the fortitude to stand up to this government and tell them like it is.

We should be encouraging him, not using the ever present fear of retaliation and reprisals, by which others have allowed themselves to be silenced.

You just keep doing what you do best Sowande. We are listening and hopefully some day, many more will find their voices.

Do I really have to remind anyone about the man we finally recognized as a hero? Does the name Noel Lloyd mean nothing to you VG? Now, more than ever, or at least since the Bates-Hill agreement was rescinded, has it become necessary for BVI citizens to find our voices and use them!

When it becomes commonplace for government ministers to use phrases such as "done deal", or choose to keep major secrets from the people while overspending millions upon millions of unbudgeted dollars, and the most powerful man in the country insists he can't recall this, or never knew about that, or can't speak to that subject at this time; then it is absolutely necessary for people like Sowande to speak up and be heard.

A government that is unopposed, unchallenged and holds itself unaccountable to the electorate, is not a government, it is a dictatorship.

There has been so many stories of mismanagement and downright criminal behavior from the ndp. they can't be trusted at all. Everything has to be vetted.
