Hon Walwyn accused of bullying VG Festival Committee

VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Long accused of making everything he touches political and employing strong arm tactics to have things done his way, the controversial Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn (AL) is at it again.

A “slap in the face” of the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival Committee is how at least two persons have described a decision to honour only one out of the four founding members of the festival, Bernice Sprauve, as dictated by Hon Walwyn.

Mr Andy Flax, Rose Gardener, and Rupert Ephraim, were the other honourees initially chosen by the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival Committee to be recognised this year.

According to our well-placed sources, a meeting was held by the Minister late last week with a few members of the existing committee, where the announcement of the plan change was made. We understood that it was met with silence since 90% of the committee members present were government employees and felt intimidated.

Slap in the face of the committee

One source said all the committee’s work and funds over the months, such as investing in a huge billboard, posters, interviews with the honourees, which were aired on local radio stations, of the history of the inception of the festival as well as a brief biographies, countless hours and months of planning, is nothing more than a slap to the committee’s face.

“How do you expect those people who were interviewed to feel? It’s a slap in the face, and the hurtful part of this whole thing you know, all this is being done by working persons. We all have 9-5 jobs, so we took time out of our busy schedule trying to make this happen for you to now come and do this to us?” our source questioned.

“Of course it is a slap in the committee’s face. We wanted to honour the founding members, and at the eleventh hour the minister just comes and says we are going to honour one person. Why is it so significant with this one person? Is it because she is a National Democratic Party (NDP) affiliate? Because she is a staunch NDP supporter. It is highly politically motivated, everybody can see that,” the source continued.

“After 50 years, it is such a milestone, why can’t we honour all the persons who were significant in getting this thing off the ground as opposed to honouring one person. Why is it?”

He said to his knowledge this is the first time that something like this has happened.

In terms of the plan to deal with the issue, our source said a meeting with the entire committee will be held to discuss the way forward.

“We have a few steps we are going to take,” he vowed.

Another source, who we also spoke to on condition of anonymity, explained that the reason was to have a unified celebration, with all the living founding members, “because to get from where we were 50 years ago, it didn’t take one individual.”

Action group formed

According to our source, an action group has been formed to tackle the gripes of the sister island, such as being left behind and things are being done without their involvement.

“Because we are paying taxes and we are not getting our fair share on Virgin Gorda. We are very annoyed, we are very upset about it. We are prepared to continue to agitate and protest and demand that things are done properly. The Minister needs to leave the decision that the committee made months ago when the government wasn’t paying any attention to them because they didn’t have the money to move anything forward on Virgin Gorda,” our source pointed out.

Our attempts to reach Chairperson of the Virgin Gorda Easter festival Committee Ms Sasha D.A. Flax and Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn were unsuccessful.

I say go ahead and recognize the four individuals! What the heck can Walwyn do but make himself look like an utter fool if he tries to stop it. Enough is enough, how the hell does he think he got where he is, the people of the BVI put him there. Time for him to humble himself. Honor your four people, he is only where he is for a time and can't do anything about it!! Stop being intimidated!
DO NOT LET THIS RUIN YOUR FESTIVAL CELEBRATION!!

@Hmmm I agree with your statement! THE VG Festival Committee should go ahead and recognize the four individuals that they have already decided on. You should have the right to speak publicly without fear of being assassinated by the Government. If it's okay for you to be on the Committee then it should be okay for you to speak your views. This is the Virgin Islands, this is not a dictatorship or communist country. Mr. Minister needs to understand that he is not above anyone else, and that it is the people that put him in their to do what's best for the Territory and not what's best for his personal gratification!

This man is truly overbearing and so pompus with it! Chuuuuuupes!

This conceited-baldhead carrot/garrot didn’t even grow-up with us, who knows nothing of our struggles, who grew up and was educated under some mango tree somewhere, here trying to dictate to us what we should or should not do.

Starting from our culture to education, he trying to take us back to the days of mental and psychological slavery, with all his intimidating tactics.

He has produced no kind of foundational paradigm shifts or changes to anything in his ministry that we can believe in; just trying to implement the same dumb-down mental conditioning picked up from some other struggling countries, from culture to education, nothing new or forward-thinking.

People can’t even share, think, and decide for themselves what they consider as a positive step for cultural and educational unity in our own country.

People, we need to push-back. This type of intimidation is a disgrace to us and a slap in the face to our Ancestors; he needs to be stopped in his tracks before he gets even worse.

When are going to start standing our ground and stop acting like a set of scared-cowardly chickens!

Maybe we should stop eating chicken for a while and start drinking bull-foot soup until we can muster "real strength" and build up some strong legs to place them in his- “you know where.” His attitude is becoming soo obnoxious and ridiculous now.

Coming from a born Virgin Islander. Allow me to relate an ancestoral tale to you- pass-down to me from my grandmother who is no longer with us.

        Ready.

There was once this vicious and aggressive bulldog, who always roaming our farms and killing our lifestock.

One day this bulldog came across this old stray bull on the farm and he prance on it, tear it apart, eat it and had his fill.

He felt soo boastful that after he was done, he started to howled loudly for all to hear in all the fields. Some hunters who happened to be hunting in the fields that day, who knew nothing about this particular bulldog, heard the howls and shot the bulldog in fear of their lives.

The moral of the story is - whenever you're full of BULL, it's best to keep your mouth shut. Got it!

Why didn't they get some people with understanding to assist. This is a disgrace, to see that Government is financing the festival and cannot make suggestions or be given some respect. $100,000.00 and where is it going. Every year you still owe people, where is the management of festival?????

The event was never named after Ms. Gardener. This is not the point. The point is that VG wants to unite and always only putting individuals ahead because of politics was something the committee wanted to change. For the 50th we want to show Myron and the entire that we stand together. the village can be named next year and the year after. This year is special and we give kudos to the committee for being community minded. Myron you WILL GET NO VOTES in VG next time around. After that fiasco at the school now this. I am sure the little things that are happening is not at all a problem, but some are making it a problem. After giving them all this money shouldn't the minister have a concern about what is happening or going on. People be reasonable, and I agree there is more to this story. The 50th Festival should showcase the cultural history of Virgin Gorda for that time span. It is not about personal agendas. In terms of the finances, that information should be made public shortly after the festivities. Let's re-group and do what is in the best interest for our community. Virgin Gordians, rise up above and make our country proud.
