Hon Vanterpool warns TRC, telecoms companies to improve services
He was speaking today July 31, 2014 at a luncheon hosted by the TRC to mark 50 years of telecommunications in the Virgin Islands held at Maria’s By The Sea.
“Can the local providers and the TRC adequately sustain and foster this dependency and reliance that we have on technology?” he asked. He said that the survival of the twin pillars of the Virgin Islands’ economy – tourism and Financial Services – are dependent on a positive answer to that question.
“One of the responsibilities of the Minister for Communications and Works to ensure that the answer is indeed a resounding yes,” said Hon Vanterpool. “It is my responsibility to ensure that these islands keep pace with international trends in the field of technology,” he said.
He said that he is not happy that consumers are not happy with the services presently offered.
“I must state here clearly that as Minister for Communications and Works I cannot be happy that the public is not happy with the [provision] of telephone and internet services that we have been having so many challenges with,” he said.
“I do appreciate that providers have been upgrading their services and that we must be patient with them. But I cannot state more clearly that between the TRC and the providers that the public is not satisfied with what is happening today,” he said.
“I know we’re working hard but we must work harder. We must ensure that our systems in the Territory can be boastful of 50 years of improvements. I warn the providers to get on completing your upgrades and I want to warn the TRC that they must ensure that the three providers now, with any other, including the fourth possible provider – BVI Cable TV – all can enjoy and share and have the opportunity to be fully [benefit the spectrum],” the Minister said.
