Hon Skelton links himself to controversial Kittitian PM Douglas
Many political pundits and historians see it as a national project vital to all which was started by the opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) in 2002 and completed by the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 2014.
However, many were shocked to listen to Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton Minister for Health and Social Development’s main address in which he used the occasion to play the usual NDP divisive politics and associated himself with the controversial St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Denzel L. Douglas.
Free speech hated by NDP
In keeping with the NDP team of hostility to free speech Minister Skelton lashed out at those who supported the new hospital, but asked questions of cost to maintain the new structure, cost of hiring a full complement of staff and cost for its day-to-day operations for the over $100M facility.
The Minister in his speech at the opening described those asking such questions as “detractors”.
The Territorial Representative who was defeated in the 2007 elections used the festive time to say, “some say our dreams are too lofty; that this is too big an investment; or that we simply can’t afford it; that it accounts for too large a portion of our national debt”. However Minister Skelton told the residents that to those who exercised their freedom of expression his answer to them is to use the words of the St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Denzel L. Douglas, which Hon. Skelton admitted were “not appropriate for the occasion.”
The Health Minister never said what the words were that he deemed inappropriate.
Is Dr. Douglas' administration like the NDP?
Many critics of the St. Kitts/Nevis Prime Minister's Labour Party government including at a recent visit by Head of Team Unity Dr. Timothy S. Harris which comprises three politics parties combined, accused the Douglas Administration of mismanagement, corruption and not upholding the constitution of the Federation of St. Kitts/Nevis, the same charges made against the NDP government by the two opposition parties in the House of Assembly.
The Dr Douglas Administration is also accused of political victimization, an instance of which is the taking away of Dr Harris’ diplomatic passport and giving one to an Iranian, and the failure to bring crime under control, the result of which is that St Kitts and Nevis ranks in the top ten of the most homicidal countries in the world.
The Douglas Administration has been accused of selling off state lands to foreign investors from places such as the Middle East and has also been accused of undermining democracy, in that the Administration has not called the Motion of No Confidence brought against it almost two years ago.
