Hon Ralph T. O’Neal supports Govt's Tax Matters Bill
Speaking on the debate on the Bill during the Ninth Sitting of the Third Session of the Second House of Assembly, Hon O’Neal said that it is getting harder and harder in the international financial services scene and as such the Territory should do what it can to meet the necessary international requirements.
“From what I hear on the radio especially from some of the European countries, they are very tough on it now and making sure that they could squeeze those who enter to play Mickey Mouse,” he said.
“I am backing the Government on what is being done. But I know what it is when you have to make use of the provisions in the law to pass a bill on its introduction,” said Hon O’Neal (R9).
“It is not a matter of politics, but a matter for the country and we have to do it,” he said. "It might be a bitter taste for some people but sweet will be the flower. I am in full support that we go ahead with this Bill. People might make a lot of noise…but we cannot be afraid of some people making noise, because it is absolutely necessary,” he said.
Speaking earlier in introducing the Bill for debate and passage on the same day, Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr. the Hon Kedrick D. Pickering (R7) said that it is not the usual practice for the House to pass Bills in a rush on the same day of their introduction.
“In times when it has been done it has always been in matters related to our financial services. Invariably, matters of an urgent nature. So Madam Speaker this particular Bill falls into fits into that,” explained Dr. the Hon Pickering.
