ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- It seems like once you get lucky to be elected to office in the Virgin Islands many of the perks could be extended, even if you lose the next general election.

At least one current Member of the House of Assembly, Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr. the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering (R7), believes that perks must be extended to former legislators.

Administrative Complex Facilities Manager Ariel Donovan was testifying before the House of Assembly’s Standing Finance Committee last year when Deputy Premier Pickering enquired of the cost to pave the parking lots at the Central Administration Building.

To this, Mr Donovan advised lawmakers that the quote of $375,000.00 was given to pave the parking lots with asphalt.

Meanwhile, the Member for the Fifth District Honourable Deloris Christopher wanted considerations to be given to paving of the parking lots at the Central Administration Complex.

In addition, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Hon Pickering suggested that “parking spaces be designated for former Members”.

The Facilities Manager, Mr Donovan, promised to “look into that possibility”.

While members were calling for the paving of the lots and giving special parking privileges to former legislators, the Central Administration Complex Facilities Manager also warned lawmakers that he had no plans to do that because the parking lots were designated building sites.

When Mr Donovan was pressed, he said the eastern parking lot was designated for the Law Block.

The Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works, Anthony S. McMaster who can be considered the landlord for the Central Administration Complex, indicated that because of the parking lot already earmarked for something else there was a parking lot designated near the Cruise Pier Project that could hold approximately 100 vehicles.

Mr McMaster further indicated that the parking lot, coupled with the other parking lots located throughout the city, would suffice for parking at the Central Administration Complex.

Sheer madness!! Now that they have not done anything constructive about the parking problem. Now the idea is to compound the problem by decreasing potential parking slots for deadbeat politicians.

The island of Tortola has many glaring issues, one of which is parking. So coming from a Minister of Government to suggest putting a bar on the already limited parking in BVI and especially at this particular location, its not a very wise suggestion. Legislators once in office gets compensated at many levels, so we owe them nothing more realistically.

Perhaps you can offer them some type of shuttle service from home or a designated pick up location once they intend to visit the Government Complex directly.

They deserve no additional special privileges. What is the recommended reserved spots; 15, 20, or 30?

there's hardly enough space for employee and people doing day to day business, why reserve a spot for people who might never show up with a week or month. Poor thinking.

Just another way that members of the HoA continue to waste time and only look out for themselves instead of the actual serious matters of the day. If every member of the HoA were voted out in the next election, it wouldn't surprise me.

An okay idea once it is not one a man. Designate three spaces and let it be first come first serve. Not for spouses. Not for children. Not for overuse by any one.
Why? Service is service. Once people genuinely join a life of service they never truly stop advocating for 'the people'.

These men think they are lords. They do not understand they are the people's servants. That is why they are using taxpayers money as they please without coming to the people and being accountable. They are hoping to be rulers of the people even when they are out of office. I hope someone higher is watching.

Hon. Pickering you could start by giving up your designated space and those of your elected party members. With so many pressing issues such as overkill of our natural resources and lack of jobs for locals I find it very disturbing to see that is where your focus and priority is right now. There is hardly any parking space for employees and patrons alike and you want to take those away as well. On another note, reserved parking space is available within walking distance (vicinity of banks) for a small fee...let them utilize those instead since it is assumed they would not be in the administration complex for any length of time at any given time.

These people make me sick. Why does these people need special parking spaces? People who go to work every day can't find space to park now they are going to take spaces for when people who don't even drive come to Road Town? They are getting worse. Of all the things that they could have come up with they came up with this BS. I am so ashamed of these stupid, shallow selfless fools. Can't wait to get rid of them.

Which Jesus? The black prophet whose mother was Mary the black woman whom the Catholic Church and European Christians continue the lying lore and painted him white? We live in an information age. It is time the church wake up and speak the truth about the lie perpetrated for centuries by the Catholic Church. This is the legacy of the black man stolen; we are uncovering the truth now.

Are the ex members still driving around in those big vehicles, or did they have to give them up. Remember, each one had its district number for a plate.

well sa!!!! of all the pressing matter in the BVI today, we have a leader fussing about parking spots...these guys only seeking to secure thier own best personal intreast...when VIP were in they came up with personalized lisence plates and being able to park anywhere without being ticketed by police.....people working 6 & 7 jobs, gun crime growing, poor health care yet the persons we have elected not adressing these important issues(both parties,VIP/NDP are full of themselves)........

You need to know the facts. It was the NDP who came up with those licence plates, not the VIP

No one should be surprised about what is being requested. We are all aware that the reclamation which is taking place by the Cruise ship dock was intended to be used as a green area and for parking. That has been swept aside by members of Cabinet who have divided it up among themselves. Is the Governor still Chairman of that Cabinet?
