Hon Myron V. Walwyn should be removed from office- Edmund G. Maduro
“Is this a man who we have elected to represent us,” asked Mr Maduro as he read from an article published by a local online news site in January stating that Hon Walwyn told senior staff of his Ministry that "In today’s society, our Governments cannot write laws and implement policies to completely protect our local population like we did years ago. There are many occasions where we wish we could do more to protect opportunities for our people, but the world doesn’t work that way anymore."
Speaking on 'The EGM Show' on ZROD 103.7 FM on Thursday July 7, 2016, Mr Maduro blasted Hon Walwyn for making such a statement.
“So you see how he is educating his Ministry to further torment us? I want to know are these the words of a lawyer, a man seeking to be our next Premier? Are these the words of a Minister of Education, seeking to become our next Premier? What are we the people for? We got to be idiots. We got to be Moo Moos, we got to be fools.
‘Have this man removed from office’
Mr Maduro demanded that Hon Walwyn produce the laws that show how it is the VI can’t fully protect its people anymore.
“We have all the laws and all the rights we need in this world today to protect us and if we don’t have this man removed from office something is wrong with us.”
“The Universal Declaration of the United Nations protects us against all of these nonsense and you have a man who went to school to be a lawyer, a man who is now our Minister of Education, telling us such nonsense? Something is wrong with not only him but the Premier. Why is he still there? Is he suffering from Alzheimer’s? Does he read the constitution? Does he read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?”
The former Chief Immigration Officer, Maduro, said Virgin Islanders have to learn to stand up and defend themselves.
“We must not forget what Christopher Flemming from East End did for us. That man spent time in jail fighting for us. We must not forget what Mr Faulkner from Anegada did for us. We must not forget what Mr Carlton DeCastro did for us. We must not forget what Mr Fonseca did for us. We cannot forget what Mr H.R. Penn did for us, people like J.R. O’Neal, the Georges. And we have a man now coming up with all these ignorance like we ourselves didn’t go to school? Bring the law and show us the people what hinders you from doing the job we have given you to do,” Mr Maduro stated.
2nd call for Hon Walwn to step down
This is the second time a call has been made for Hon Walwyn to step down as a legislator.
In May 2015, three Opposition Members, Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3), Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and Hon J. Alvin Christopher (R2), claimed that Hon Walwyn breached the Constitution between 2012 and 2015 because two of his companies – MVW International Company Limited and The Pub (2012) Limited – are allegedly contracted by the House of Assembly.
The then Opposition Members wrote a letter to Governor John S. Duncan OBE and Premier Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith, asking them to exercise their powers and responsibilities, which they both have under the Virgin Islands Constitution, to take the required steps to ensure that the Honourable Walwyn “vacates his seat in the House of Assembly, as mandated by the Constitution.”
No action was taken and Hon Walwyn went on to be elected for a second term as an At Large Representive at the June 8, 2015 general elections.
