Hon Fraser to host public meeting in SCB on Thursday
At the meeting which is scheduled to take place at the Valerie O. Thomas Community Centre in Sea Cows Bay from 7 pm, Hon Fraser will also be taking a critical look at the overall economy of the Virgin Islands, which he said seems to be on a continuous slide.
“I will also take the opportunity to reiterate my diligence for good governance and transparency by pointing out the constant abuses of the Protocols for Effective Financial Management by this government, which continues to treat the document more like a hand-shake than the contract which it really is,” he said in a comment to this news site.
“Recently I learned of the situation at one of the Territory's leading resorts which is slated for a troubling reduction in staff, together with what will amount to a substantial downsizing through the closing of what is an entire wing, consisting of almost thirty rooms, and was itself at one time a stand-alone hotel,” said Hon Fraser, commenting on the state of the economy at present.
He pointed out that he has tried numerous times in the House of Assembly to get answers from Government on some of these areas of concern to him but to no avail.
“To describe my encounters with this government to get answers on pressing matters that are pertinent to our compliance with the very Protocols that they signed with the Government of the United Kingdom on April 23, 2012, as anything but frustrating, will be less than telling the truth,” he said.
He said that for three consecutive sittings of the House of Assembly spanning a period of one month he tried getting Government to provide answers on issues such as the Cruise Pier development project and the related land side development but without any success.
“My attempts to get answers to questions were either blocked from gaining entry onto the Order Paper by the Speaker, which was the case on two occasions, or stonewalled by the Premier who flat out refused to answer, on the grounds that his answer will not serve the public's interest,” said Fraser.
“So until my questions are answered, I will continue to hound the government even at the expense of sounding like a broken record,” he said.
Fraser said that at the public meeting he will also address concerns surrounding National Health Insurance, education reform, joblessness and the fact that women have been sometimes forced to engage in unsavoury acts just to make ends meet.
