ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Third District representative, Hon. Julian Fraser, RA, told Government Ministers that he will be all over them like “a wet blanket” when it comes to the development of the Virgin Islands (VI).

He was at the time speaking on youth development at the last House of Assembly Sitting (HOA) that was held on December 21, 2011.

“I don’t want to see the youths just chopping bush or cutting grass especially in the Third District, I want to see them play some decent basketball. I stand behind that Madame Speaker, I mean it, I will be here now and I will be back to talk about it. I got time now I could see things you know. I got a lot of time on my hands. I will be all over you guys now like a wet blanket,” Hon. Fraser told members of the House.

It’s his belief that maintaining sports facilities throughout the Territory plays a large part in youth affairs.

To hammer home his point, the 3rd District representative argued that a number of youths are in jeopardy of getting lost, adding “They congregate in places that are intended for their upkeep and advancement, but the places are basically non-functional. Basketball courts, softball fields, if we don’t maintain these facilities its no use building them.”

Hon Fraser further stated that he had a close look at a basketball court “the other night and I said my God we actually built it but no one came back. No one came back Madam Speaker, and the only thing when anyone comes by will say is that the Government has abandoned its young people.”

To this end, he appealed to Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn, to spend his first $500,000 down in Sea Cows Bay to show that he is serious about the youths in the Territory.

AM SURE THAT THE BASKET BALL COURT THAT HON. FRAZER HAD A CLOSE LOOK AT THE OTHER NIGHT HAD TO BE THE FACILITY IN BELLE VUE. THAT SURELY IS ONE THAT "NO ONE WENT BACK TO". AS THE BVI FIRST IN-DOOR COURT I EXPECTED IT TO BE BETTER KEPT, BUT THAT SURELY IS NOT THE CASE. AND BEFORE YALL START BLAMING THE YOUTHS IN THAT COMMUNITY, PLEASE NOTE, I AM A BASKETBALL PLAYER THAT USES THAT SAME COURT EVERY MORNING AND I AM LIVING ALL THE WAY IN WEST END AND THERE ARE QUITE A NUMBER OF OTHER PLAYERS FROM OTHER DISTRICTS THAT PLAY THERE TOO. THE YOUTHS IN THE DISTRICT TRY THEIR BEST TO KEEP THE COURT FLOOR CLEAN AND WHEN NEEDED WE PAD UP AND PURCHASE NETS FOR THE RIMS AND DO MINOR MAINTENANCE. WITH ALL THIS BEING SAID, I THUNK THAT THE DISTRICT REP. FOR THE 6TH DISTRICT SHOULD APPOINT A RESPONSIBLE PERSON AS MANAGER OVER THAT FACILITY AS I SEE SO MUCH POTENTIAL FOR THAT PLACE. HON. CAINES, I AM READILY ABLE AND WILLING ALONG WITH A FEW GOOD MEN AND YOUR BELLE VUE CREW TO "CLEAN UP" THAT FACILITY AND KEEP IT THAT WAY AS IT IS A BENEFIT TO US ALL.
