ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Third term legislator, Sixth District Representative and Opposition Member with the National Democratic Party (NDP), Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines has decided to cross the floor to join the Virgin Islands Party (VI) Government led by Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1).

This was announced by Premier Fahie at a press conference aired live on ZBVI 780AM minutes ago, January 20, 2020 and subsequently confirmed by Hon Maduro-Caines.

According to Premier Fahie, Hon Maduro-Caines has bought into the vision of the VIP Government and has chosen to join the VIP to help it push its agenda for national development.

Contemplation & Prayers

Hon Maduro-Caines told reporters she decided to join the VIP after much deep contemplation and prayer over the last weeks as well as speaking to some of her constituents, who have supported her decision.

She said she tendered her resignation to the National Democratic Party (NDP) today, January 20, 2020.

The female legislator said she considered the vision by Hon Fahie in the 2020 Budget Address and believes it is a plan deserving of full support for all patriotic citizens.

According to Hon Maduro-Caines, she has seen the progress of the VIP Government in the last 11 months despite obstacles and was particularly impressed with the programmes that help industry training and academic qualifications for Virgin Islanders.

“I believe that is the direction our Territory must be headed."

Meanwhile, the Virgin Islands Party, which won the general elections in February 2019, now has 3 female legislators, with Hon Maduro-Caines joining Junior Ministers, Hons Shereen D. Flax-Charles and Sharie B. DeCastro.

It also means the VIP Government holds 9 of the 13 seats in the Virgin Islands House of Assembly (HoA).

More details to follow.

Why now.? Doesn't make a difference now... Would have made a difference if she had done this under her NDP party rule. While there were mega in fighting and destruction of the country.... NDP did so much good for this country. However in their last 2 years their failures were so great. Over shadowed all their good. .. Good for Ms Caines. Try make a difference...

This was the switch the people were asking Ronnie Marlon Alvera and Archie to make when NDP Docs n lawyer were reckless and out of control... Join VIP make the change.. If that had happen the BVI would have been better off. We would have an experience knowledgeable caring Deputy in Ronnie.. Yep. Don't matter now.

All and sundry knows that those boys on the other side have no respect for her and only try to do something in her district when it’s election time only to used her to help them win. Welcome to the Green machine Mrs. Maduro Caines, well done. Don’t mind the naysayers and confusion makers.

This is no loss frankly. She just takes up space. Andrew is a whole lot if noise with no realistic goal but to gain reelection which won't happen. and to get control of RDA moneys which could happen..
As time goes by there will just be a bunch of loose ends with him tripping over himself. No clear sensible direction nothing thought out, massive loud noise up and down and a fib here and there to cover tracks...

Honorable Maduro Caines blessings and all the best with the green team. Today January 20 2020 is a historic day. Dr. Martin Luther King Holliday in the USA, The day Ronald Reagan was sown in to be the President of the USA and more....
The things done in the 10 months in the 6th district were left undone for over 8 years. The fisherman dock, the road in Johnson Ghut, the work in Baugher's Bay, the youth programs and the historic record budget 2020. I agree with you who can't see will wonder.

Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines crossing the floor as a member of NDP to becoming a member of VIP is no surprise; the surprise, if any, is that it took so long. Prior to the Feb 25, 2019 election, Alvera was recruited by several parties. Nonetheless, in the end, she stayed loyal to the NDP. However, loyalty is not a one-way street; it swings both ways. In the NDP, she was just a number in a lopsided 11-2 majority. Some may argue that her strength was being a back bencher. Moreover, in the unraveling of the NDP just prior to the election and when it had no other option, she was appointed a junior minister. It is important to note that she was 1 of 2 women in the NDP 11-2 majority; late Delores Christopher (D-5), the other. Both had no key role in governing; Hon Christopher was Deputy Speaker.

Moreover, Hon Maduro-Caines (D-5) was elected to represent the people of the 5th District. IMO she sees crossing the floor as the best opportunity to bringing more services to her district. It is all about self-interest. To the victor goes the spoils. In the West Minister model, though it is despicable, opposition members struggle to bring services to their districts. Constituents in opposition districts exercised their constitutional/democratic right to elect a rep of their choosing and should not be punished for it. Territorial resources should go where the greatest needs are. But politics is politics. Was it Churchill that says politics is worse than war. Wow! Nuff said. Wish the Hon Maduro-Caines well.

The NDP stifled her for years. She got very little done in her district. She was not a priority for them but she was loyal. She got no respect from them but she remain loyal. Why stay loyal if you can’t truly represent and get progress for your District.

Marlon isn’t disappointed. He is actually envious that she did what he couldn’t do. He was treated like her for 8 years to the detriment of his people by his same NDP Government. Those of us with common sense can’t really take Marlon and anything he says seriously. One of these days Marlon will wake up and realise he is not a true politician and he is not truly for the people.
