LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI- The Stickett in Long Look, on the main island of Tortola, has become more than just a meeting place and a fancy piece of architecture, as a homeless man has since taken up residence there.

This was revealed during the Seventh Sitting of the First Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) on October 17, 2019 via a question posed to the Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Carvin Malone (AL) by Leader of the Opposition, Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8).

“Mr Speaker, could the Honourable Minister for Health and Social Development please tell this Honourable House if his ministry is aware that a homeless man has been living at the Stickett in Long Look for months now?” Hon Penn, who said he has been a resident of Long Look in the Seventh District for some 5 years now, asked.

Before answering the question directly, Hon Malone noted that the research shows the person has been living at The Stickett for more than a year but the question only asks for the last few months.

Gov't has already reached out to homeless person- Hon Malone

Hon Malone said; however, that through the outreach activities of the Safe Haven Transitional Center, the Ministry of Health and Social Development had been made aware of an individual “who has been sleeping” at The Stickett.

He said a staff of Safe Haven has made contact with the individual’s family and met with family members in relation to his situation.

“We have been advised there are housing options available to this individual within his family circle. That, notwithstanding, an invitation was extended to the individual and his family to take up residence at the Safe Haven Transitional Center whenever he is so inclined.”

Hon Malone continued that the Representative for the Seventh District, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), “has opined, he has begged, he has instructed, that everything that is required should be done in order to provide relief for the person. He actually mentioned a location where housing could be had and the Ministry is working in terms of getting the temporary housing and then working towards the permanent solution to this issue.”

According to Hon Malone, the issue is known, is being worked on and needs to be resolved post haste.

Meanwhile, Hon Penn said despite being the Representative for the Eighth District, he has been living in the Seventh District for some five years and insisted it is only about five months he has noticed the individual living at The Stickett.

Hon. Marlon is such a weak opposition leader it makes me cringe! Mr. Penn you are apart of the East End/Long Look community, how dear you ask such a question when you Sir is also apart of the Government! Rather than trying to finger point or create a negative debacle about the government (VIP) every time you open your mouth!!! how about you Hon. M Penn coming to the honorable house, state what you have observed and give a solution/ idea on how you can help your people in the East End area!!!! You ain’t ready at all! You next to go!!!

Why are they homeless? Before being homeless what was their life before? HoW they hardship hit them? Lack of job? Drugs, weed? Woman/man stress? Family neglect? It’s important was it’s the only way we can prevent future homeless people within the Virgin Islands?
