ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The experience of two young Virgin Islands basketball players will be taken to a whole new level when they wing out tomorrow December 4, 2015 for New York, USA where they will be part of the Digicel NBA elite clinic.

The two lucky ballers are D’moi M. Hodge and Malachy S. Payne, who are being rewarded with an NBA experience for their winning performance at Digicel’ s Jumpstart Basketball Clinic held recently in Trinidad and Tobago.

The two players will be in New York from December 4 to 8, 2015 representing the Virgin Islands. They will join six other young players from across the Caribbean, and these eight players will be put through their paces every day by NBA coaches and an NBA legend at Columbia University in New York, after which they will challenge other young players from Rutgers school.

According to a press release from Digicel BVI, the boys will also get to relax while in New York and do some touring. “They will get to tour the Rockefeller Center, visit the home of the Knicks at Madison Square Garden and experience the Adidas store in SoHo. They will also have the opportunity to get a tour of the Barclays Center before enjoying the best seats at this weekend’s NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and the Brooklyn Nets,” the press release stated.

Meanwhile, the VI duo of D’moi M. Hodge and Malachy S. Payne will be accompanied to New York by former basketball star and coach Jason A. Edwin.

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online, Edwin, the assistant coach of the 2014 Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball Champions and 2015 semi-finalists, Bayside Blazers, said: “The guys have been working hard in preparation for the trip and we are not only excited by the chance of a lifetime but thankful to Digicel for making it possible.”

The selection of the eight players was made at the Digicel NBA Jumpstart Elite Camp, which took place in Trinidad from September 26, to September 28, 2015. The best young players from across the Caribbean were tutored by experienced NBA coaches and NBA Legend, Muggsy Bogues. Over the three days, their performances were evaluated and at the end the final eight were selected by the coaches. These talented young basketball players now have the opportunity to experience life as an NBA pro thanks to Digicel’s programme, with access to the finest facilities and training.

Digicel CEO hails talented lads

Digicel CEO, Conor Looney added, “Digicel recognises the extraordinary achievement of D’moi and Malachy, who have made it to our Elite Camp this weekend, from an original group of over 300 boys from across the Caribbean. Although they have made to the final training, I would also like to highlight the talent of all of the boys who stepped up throughout the programme. Good luck to D’moi and Malachy on this basketball journey; Digicel will continue to support talented young people in the Virgin Islands to achieve their potential, locally or internationally.”
