ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Overturning an early ten point deficit, District 2 surged back to beat District Five 47-41 in the Championship Game of the BD Basketball District King League on Saturday April 20, 2013 at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex.

D’Moi Hodge and Romain Minott grabbed the headlines, but it was an all round team effort that secured the victory as well as a momentum changing tactic from District 5 that secured victory.

Entering the 2nd quarter up 18-8, District 5 slowed the tempo down seemingly thinking they had the game under control but the move didn’t work as a couple of steals and a turnover handed back the initiative to District 2.

Half time saw the margin just 3 points to District 5 at 21-18 and by the end of the 3rd quarter District 2 were up 31-29 partly due to a breakdown in discipline by District 5 and a Technical Foul awarded against Franklynn Penn Junior for dissent.

District 2 then began to pull further ahead and the score was 41-35 in their favour into the last 4 minutes.

A steal by Terrique Wattley led to a foul on Rasheele Roberts who made it 41-38 with two successful free throws handed District 5 a lifeline, but as the game neared the two minute warning Noel Maxwell hit a 2 pointer and also sank the free throw from a foul as he shot to make it 43-38.

At 1.51 remaining, Wattley nailed a 3 pointer to make it 44-41 and then following a time out Minott was tripped by Roberts. He scored 1 of his free throws to make it 45-41, but then it was all District 5 as they piled on the pressure.

Wattley hit the rim, Roberts made a steal but missed with his shot and Emmanuel Jones saw a 3 pointer bounce of the rim and away to safety. However, Cymoi George was fouled as he picked up the rebound and District 2 got the breather they needed.

He calmly scored both his free throws to make it 47-41, the buzzer sounded and the District 2 fans went wild in celebration.

Minott added 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists to his 13 point tally and was named MVP.

Maxwell finshed with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Tyler Cameron added 9 rebounds to his 5 points and 4 steals and Dominic Adams picked up 5 rebounds and 5 blocks.

For District 5 Wattley finished with 13 points and 4 rebounds whilst Roberts had 7 points and 10 rebounds. Penn Jnr. Scored 14 points with 5 rebounds.

Stephen Caul of District 9 was awarded the Presidents Sportsmanship Trophy.
