HoA to meet on July 6, 2015, still no Opposition Leader!

The Third House of Assembly (HoA), also referred to as Parliament, will meet in its second sitting following the 2015 General Elections on Monday July 6, 2015 at its Chambers in Road Town, the Virgin Islands capital city. Photo: VINO/File
The Third HoA will meet for the second time in its new session without a Leader of the Opposition. This is because there is no agreement between Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) and Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) over the post of Opposition Leader following the elections where the VIP only obtained 2 out of 13 seats, keeping them in the Opposition in the HoA. Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Third House of Assembly (HoA), also referred to as Parliament, will meet in its second sitting following the 2015 General Elections on Monday July 6, 2015 at its Chambers in Road Town, the Virgin Islands capital city.

This is according to our news room’s senior sources within the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), which has an 11-seat out of 13 majority in the House of Assembly (HoA).

The order paper has not been released as of post time but, according to the same source, the Leader of Government Business, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith, is expected to have a few statements on some topical issues, including the recent lay off at Biras Creek.

The Speaker of the HoA Ingrid A. Moses, who was re-appointed and has faced heavy criticism from the Opposition, civil society and the media in her last tenure [2011-2015] for allegedly being biased, promised at the first session of the Third HoA to be “fair”.

Still no Opposition Leader

The Third HoA will meet for the second time in its new session without a Leader of the Opposition.

This is because there is no agreement between Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) and Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) over the post of Opposition Leader following the elections where the VIP only obtained 2 out of 13 seats, keeping them in the Opposition in the HoA.

Hon Fahie expressed an interest in becoming the Leader of the Opposition and Hon Fraser, who is the Chairman of the VIP, believes he should hold the post since he heads the majority party on the opposition side of the isle.

Under the Virgin Islands Constitution 2007, the issue of political party does not play a role in the pick of the Opposition Leader as all that is required is a majority in the Opposition to advise the Governor in writing who will be their Leader.

However, Hon Fahie has refused to go along with Hon Fraser as the Opposition Leader, therefore there remains an impasse.

Governor Duncan, in a press statement last week, gave the two warring factions a month and a day to see if they could break the impasse.

To date the both men cannot agree on the Leadership of the Opposition.

This news site will bring you an update once the order paper for next week’s sitting is obtained or if the impasse between Hons Fraser and Fahie has ended.

that is not a correct statement. Mr. Fraser was elected party chairman and has not been defeated for the chairmanship by Mr. Fahie or anyone else. He was reelected by the people just as Mr. fahie. Why would there be doubts as to leadership of the opposition is a notion that because Mr. Fahie and others has written to the Governor for the position of opposition leader to pass to him does not mean there isn't one. While I do believe that Mr. Fraser should step down on principle he has no obligation to do so. There is a process and that should be followed and until such time Mr. Fraser remains the leader bar non. Mr. Fahie so far has chosen to go on a merry go around as if the system that he has been a part of for some years is broken and he has no alternative that to seek the Governor's help. Am sorry that he has chosen that route and it might not spell good for him in the future.

I heard that according to VIP Constitution after an election the Executive of the Party does not exist. If that is the case, the Mr. Fraser is not the Chairman. This gives Mr. Fahie the opportunity to also contest the post of Leader of the Opposition. The then President of the VIP, Mr. Carvin Malone alluded to the fact that there was no executive of the Party when he spoke on the matter earlier on. The who fighting shows that something was very wrong in the VIP before election and now that they lost the election all the skeletons are coming out of the closet.

If the UK makes the decision will they investigate this election bribery mess that started all this drama?

@ voter; are you stupid or just slow: look at the margin of victory between the two parties: do you know what it will take to have bribe the majority of our people so NDP could win the election....be honest with yourself and acknowledge the fact that you wasted a good vote by voting for VIP:

TA TA, IS NOT SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER. (1) 'WE', the subject, should take a singular verb. (2) The word "field" is incorrectly spelt. (3) A sentence begins with a Capital letter and ends with a full stop. Blogger, blogger, be careful, you may be clobbered by Vino's grammar police.
Fifth Grader: Good line, but we in the field know better.

I guess I would have to be stupid or slow not to take bribes in this nation 'hear you'll tell it'. You people will understand one day when this place turns into the other Caribbean Islands...and the people here have to go abroad looking for their daily bread. We all know that NDP bribed the voters I guess you and Dr. Smith are the only two people with their heads in the sand. Or maybe you got three or four envelopes. Full of corruption and all forms of evil, take you’ll mess out of this country and go mess up somewhere else ‘we don't need poverty spreading here’!

How you mean to say their is no opposition leader as a matter of fact there are two Fraser and Fahie. One one way and the other the other way but of the same party. So just as well both be elected as opposition leader.Fraser VIP and Fahie VIP

...And what is so wrong about asking about the treasury given that the NDP mash it up and cleaned it out to win the elections.
