ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI: It was a sad day this morning Wednesday, October 17, 2018, when the House of Assembly (HoA) reconvened at its Chambers in Road Town, the Virgin Islands' Capital City.

While the Order Paper was filled with debate and committee sessions over the Human Rights Bill and the Recovery Board funding, elected members were visibly in distress over the death of their colleague.

They observed a moment of silence on the passing of Hon Delores Christopher who died after a brief illness at the age of 70, yesterday October 16, 2018.

Members were shaken and could not continue with the business of the Parliament and rightly adjourned until next Tuesday, October 23, 2018.

She loved her people & country

Hon Christopher, one of five women to be elected in the Territory was first elected in 2003-2007 with the National Democratic Party (NDP).  She lost the 2007 elections to the then Virgin Islands Party (VIP) candidate Elvis J. Harrigan.

She came back in 2011 and defeated Mr Harrigan.  In 2015 she ran for re-election and was successful after defeating the VIP’s Zoe J. Walcott.  In 2015 she was elected Deputy Speaker of the HoA.  She also was a cultural icon and was the driving force behind Christmas on Main Street.

The late Ms Christopher had taken the unusual steps to speak out against her own NDP Government over, loss of policy direction, mismanagement of funds and in many cases blatantly ignoring her 5th district.

Hon Christopher was also the Head of the Trade Department in her earlier civil servant career where she spent years championing for locals economic rights. She is survived by three children and her husband Bob.
