BALSAM GHUT, Tortola, VI- Information just reaching our newsroom from well placed sources is that a prisoner of Her Majesty's Prison in Balsam Ghut set his cell on fire this morning, September 6, 2016.

The incident reportedly occurred sometime around 7:30  A.M.

The prisoner is said to be Kevin Tyson.

This news site was told that prison officers were alerted to the fire by several prisoners who began to shout "fire, fire, in the A-Wing."

No one was injured in the incident and it is not clear how the prisoner managed to start a fire in his cell.

Tyson was reportedly involved in a fight with a prison officer at the Magistrate's Court in John's Hole yesterday, September 5, 2016. The prison officer reportedly suffered minor injuries.

This news site was further told that there was a second incident this morning when the prisoners in the affected wing were let out of their cells due to the thick smoke from the fire.

It is said that when the prisoners were released many of them pounced on another inmate, said to be Caucasion, dealing him several blows.

"They had to relocate him to the Juvenile section," one of our sources said of the inmate who was attacked.

Efforts to reach Superintendent of Prisons Mr David Foot were unsuccessful as of post time and there were unconfirmed reports that he is on vacation.

More details as information comes in.

This young man is a menace. How on Earth was he able to set fire to his cell? Are prisoners allowed to have matches or lighters?

He needs to be deported back to Antigua the minute he finishes serving his sentence(s). In the meantime, his cell needs to be stripped to the bare minimum and he shouldn't be permitted to mix with the general population within the prison. His behaviour is deplorable. Next thing you know, he'll try to start a riot!

What is really going on at that institution? That place really need a cleansing beginning with staff down the line to the inmates and their living quarters. Or are they going to wait for someone to get kill, before they seriously address the situation. Its too often that there are incident that have some serious consequences. There should be no cooking or electrical appliances in any cell for inmate to have access 24/7. The kitchen provide all meals, when it close, you gat your next meal the following morning. Get serious FOLKS
