PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI - The Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society achieved major recognition at the International Convention of 2013. The Convention was held from the 4-6 April and recorded 3,600 attendees. The Honors Program fulfills multiple dimensions of Phi Theta Kappa's purpose. It is designed to: foster a stimulating environment for intellectual growth and challenge; and create opportunities for leadership and learning as leaders through service and advocacy.

During the Hallmark Awards Gala the Chapters within the society that have produced the most outstanding Honors in Action Projects are awarded the Society’s Hallmark Awards based on the current Honors Study Topic. The HLSCC Chapter’s submission was one of 2,990 and received two of the sixty awards given. A Chapter advisor Mrs. Debra Hodge received one of thirty Distinguished Advisor awards given.

When asked about what type of service they hoped to provide to the community, the students responded that “Because of our choice of Honors Study Topic, we as a chapter were motivated to assist the British Virgin Islands in any way possible to resuscitate mangrove forests around the country. We have brought the importance of mangroves back into the spotlight of environmental groups and institutions in our country.”

“With our research we found an area of constant or regular flooding that once had mangroves and with the help of National Parks Trust we continued the restoration of mangroves in this area. We also encouraged the action of members of the community to help with the replanting as more of a unified body and had a small outcome from this effort.”

"Although the replanting project was small, we hope that the initiative we have taken would be the catalyst to get organizations and citizens of the British Virgin Islands invested in mangrove replanting projects.”

The members of the Honors in Action Team were: Michael Boyd, Karla Dawson, Karra Parsons, Mr. Parsons, Devika Ramcharitar, Kia Barry, Eldrino Richards, Clyde Potter Jr., Sharen Wallace, Joseph Smith Abbott and several high school students. The advisors for the project were: Mr. Richard Georges, Dr. Sauda Smith, Dr. Cassander O’Neal, and Mrs. Debra Hodge.

Congratulations to the HLSCC Honors in Action team for a stellar job. We are proud of your contributions to our community. You make your teachers proud to have been a part of your development. Good luck to each of you as you continue to be productive citizens.

I encourage the advisors to continue to touch the lives of our young adults at HLSCC so that such positive initiatives will continue to thrive.

Keep up the GREAT work! It is appreciated!
