ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Information just reaching this news site indicates that the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) website has been hacked. No details have emerged about the exact time of the hacking and the level of damage done, if any, but attempts to access the site have confirmed that it is indeed hacked.

This news site was able to secure image evidence to confirm the hacking. The note on the site reads: Hacked Flan Bn Flan.. Don’t worry, Nothing of your Files Deleted… Either victory or certification”. Additionally, there are a number of Arabic notations on the site, which someone familiar with the Arabic language told this news site were pieces of broken Arabic and appeared to be a rough translation of the English text on the hacked pages.

The url for the website is www.hlscc.edu.vg which is currently offline at this time.

When contacted, President of the HLSCC, Dr. Karl Dawson said that he had no comment to offer at this time.

A source within the college confirmed that the site has been hacked but could not give further details.

Efforts to get a comment from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) on whether it has received such reports proved futile.

The hacker or hackers, which go by the name Flan Bn Flan, had claimed responsibility for taking down websites such as KLAS Sports FM in Jamaica, VideaTv and Partners for Prosperity. Some of these websites have since returned to operation while others are still non-functional.

Hacking involves unauthorized attempts to bypass the security mechanisms of an information system or network and is considered a cybercrime in many jurisdictions.

It usually involves a person or group exploiting weaknesses of a websites' security system and is often done by pranksters or persons with a social, religious or political agenda.

A group referred to as anonymous has been in the news and claimed responsibility for a number of hackings in the recent past, including those of the Pentagon and News Corp.

The video posted on the hacked site is hosted by youtube and the url is http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RnKwae4_hrI#!.

Until the college identifies how the breach occurred and plugs the hole, we must assume that the breach is ongoing and that daily password changes may be needed for the foreseeable future...my two cents

Incidents like these could be prevented by using non-decryptable encryption.
