PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI - Sixteen middle management staff of Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) recently completed an intensive two-week course in Middle Management at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Centre for Applied Marine Studies.

According to a July 22, 2019, release on the training session, various topics such as ethics in the workplace, mental health awareness, first aid/first response, health and safety, families and juveniles, and managing refractory behaviour were covered.

Officers Evaluated

“Officers were also given scenarios and evaluated after intense breakout group sessions. Constructive feedback was provided to the individuals based on how effectively those scenarios were handled and rectified,” the release noted.

Speaking at the closing ceremony for the training session, Acting President of HLSCC Mrs Judith E. Vanterpool encouraged the workshop attendees to exhibit unbiased and ethical behaviour at HM Prison.

“Success does not come easy, but success is easily lost, it can take 30 years to build a good character, but it only takes 30 seconds for it to be destroyed,” Mrs Vanterpool told those gathered.

Other facilitators of the training session included Chief of Medical Staff at BVIHSA Dr June Samuel, Police Inspector Jackie E. Vanterpool, Director of Planning at RDA Neil M. Smith, Financial Secretary Glenroy A. Forbes, Attorney Patrick Thomas, Hon Julian Fraser RA, and representatives from the BVI Red Cross.

Serving Others

Dr Richard Georges, Director of Institutional Advancement at HLSCC, took time to explain the similarities between educational institutions and correctional facilities.

“Both entities have one goal in common – to serve others. Despite educational institutions and correctional facilities having different environments and service commitments, those employed still have the heavy obligation of positively impacting the lives of those that they serve,” he said.

The successful candidates of the middle management workshop will complete another two-week course before the end of the year, dealing specifically with control and restraint, drills, and de-escalation and negotiation practices.

Do you know the terms of employment for the head of the prison? If he has a contract and the government wants to simply replace him it will cost us. Yes, us, as in taxpayers. You will be the first one to cry foul and talk about how much $$ is being squandered. Please stop and think before speaking or writing.

Sometime we need not look at the money it takes to get rid of him. Look at the damage he will do if he stays. The man seems to have no interest in the development of the prison if he has no VIslanders in the succession plan. In additio, he promoted that set even before they did the middle management course.

I Love this head of prison, he came and got 10 staff promoted, nine from islands, one local who already sixty, most all the island staff no high school diplomas, he was able to push aside four local with college credits who put in the work for their country, who when on management training in England and have the ability and knowledge to manage.
they were all overlooked, I was of the opinion that there was a succession plan to develop locals. but they were overlooked. I'm wondering who is going to make this wrong right?

One of the staff that received a promotion slept with the head of the department to obtain her promotion. What a dirty deed.
