HLSCC trains 16 HM Prison Officers
According to a July 22, 2019, release on the training session, various topics such as ethics in the workplace, mental health awareness, first aid/first response, health and safety, families and juveniles, and managing refractory behaviour were covered.
Officers Evaluated
“Officers were also given scenarios and evaluated after intense breakout group sessions. Constructive feedback was provided to the individuals based on how effectively those scenarios were handled and rectified,” the release noted.
Speaking at the closing ceremony for the training session, Acting President of HLSCC Mrs Judith E. Vanterpool encouraged the workshop attendees to exhibit unbiased and ethical behaviour at HM Prison.
“Success does not come easy, but success is easily lost, it can take 30 years to build a good character, but it only takes 30 seconds for it to be destroyed,” Mrs Vanterpool told those gathered.
Other facilitators of the training session included Chief of Medical Staff at BVIHSA Dr June Samuel, Police Inspector Jackie E. Vanterpool, Director of Planning at RDA Neil M. Smith, Financial Secretary Glenroy A. Forbes, Attorney Patrick Thomas, Hon Julian Fraser RA, and representatives from the BVI Red Cross.
Serving Others
Dr Richard Georges, Director of Institutional Advancement at HLSCC, took time to explain the similarities between educational institutions and correctional facilities.
“Both entities have one goal in common – to serve others. Despite educational institutions and correctional facilities having different environments and service commitments, those employed still have the heavy obligation of positively impacting the lives of those that they serve,” he said.
The successful candidates of the middle management workshop will complete another two-week course before the end of the year, dealing specifically with control and restraint, drills, and de-escalation and negotiation practices.
