ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Well-known political activist, frequent radio show caller, spokesman and strong supporter for the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), Simeon Pope is on the campaign trail again.

The St Vincent and the Grenadines national living in the Virgin Islands, who has made a name for himself in supporting controversial positions of the NDP, is now sporting two posters of United States Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary R. Clinton in her bid to beat out the Republican nominee Donald J. Trump.

Mr Pope, who has become notorious with plastering his automobile with posters for the NDP during the Virgin Islands (VI) elections, has now staked out his support at least via his car posters for former First Lady and US Secretary of State Hillary R. Clinton.

Local views?

Generally, in the VI, the support for both candidates is split with most Americans living here supporting Mr Trump and locals supporting Clinton.

In an invited comment,  Mr Julian Willock, who heads the political and marketing consulting firm Advance Marketing and Professional Services, which is also the parent company of this news site, said "the American election could go either way, but as of now the momentum is with Mr Trump....there is Clinton fatigue from speaking to my colleagues in the United States," opined Mr Willock, who also served as a Permanent Secretary and Director of the Water and Sewerage Department with the local government.

Mr Willock went on to state that both the VI and the Caribbean region in general "need to study the polices of both Mr Trump and Mrs Clinton to see how it affects us locally and regionally".

Trouble with the law?

Mr Pope is also known for his troubles with the law while a government employee at the Public Works Department.

He was on March 15, 2013 found guilty on seven counts of obtaining property by deception by a jury of nine in the High Court.

Mr Pope was accused of defrauding three men who alleged that they had paid him sums of monies for the purchase of used government vehicles.

He was fined $3000 and given a suspended sentence of 3 years for each of the seven offences committed. Mr Pope also fully restituted $3,900 to the three men who had filed the charges against him.

Recently, he made news again over his vehicle that was destroyed by fire in Sea Cows Bay and his public criticism of the Police and an insurance company on the matter as speculation over how the fire was started remains active.
