ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Talk Show host Julio Sam Henry has thrown out a challenge to the newly appointed Acting Chief Immigration Officer, Guy Hill, to address allegations of discrimination against Caribbean nationals coming to visit the Virgin Islands (VI).

One person who sent a text message to the Speak Your Mind TV show on October 5, 2013 alleged there were challenges in the form of ‘nasty’ problems with the attitudes and personalities of persons working at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport.

“There is a problem where there is a form of discrimination where Caribbean nationals coming into the territory as tourists to enjoy themselves, they are being scrutinised more than, say, folks from Europe or people from America,” Henry said.

Henry indicated that persons were probably doing their jobs but said he felt that there was a way to do it more diplomatically.

“If you’re coming from America with a US passport, you could have $100 in your pocket. A month later they’ll say, ‘yea, I’ve come to visit a friend’ but a month later you’ll find them on a yacht somewhere working,” Henry said.

The commentator alleged that while these persons would be able to enter the territory hassle free, others from the Caribbean always seemed to be scrutinised.

Acting appointments

He further stated that he felt that Mr Hill should have received a full appointment instead of an acting position since he had acted in the post of Chief Immigration Officer previously.

Co-host, Richard Courtney de Castro, said he felt acting appointments were a disservice to the public, “I can’t speak for the people who are putting those people in those positions,” de Castro expressed, “but I feel it is a disservice to the public and I think that it’s something that needs correcting at the legislative level.”

He suggested that time limits be attached to acting appointments where persons who are not performing within a given period are asked to ‘move on’.

How our immigration officers treat our fellow Caribbean Nationals is a SHAME! On occasion I have been abroad and had it said to me by foreigners (both white and Black) how they were roughed up by immigration officers while here in the VI.

In fact, the whole policy of requiring a visitors visa is counter-productive for a country that depends on tourism. Especially in an economic downturn, all economic textbooks say that regional and local activity is key to recovery. What policy does the intelligent people of the VI employ in this case? They of course continue to shut out regional visitors with its immigration policy.

You know, if we take a step outside of ourselves and look in objectively, we are quite ignorant people. We try to reinvent wheels and still come up with shapes that aren't circular - and we do this for everything!

According the the BVI Tourist Board new campaign we must treat every persons visiting the BVI as our Guest. I agree with this statement because this will help to elevate some of the problems we are having. Anyone coming to the BVI should be treated the same. Treat them like we want them to come and come and come again.

This is soooo true. My in-laws came for a visit from DR for the Easter Festival and I can tell you that red-skin fella and his supervisor gave them such a hassle you swear they were coming to bomb the place. Even after showing them I was fully capable of supporting them, they still gave them a hard time. Like really! what can a 74 yo man do for 1 month in this country. I was soooo mad I called Mr. Jennings to complain but with little success. Lets hope Mr. Hill does a better job.

The world is very much aware of the treatment of the Haitians by the DR. Murder is not unusual and every day ill treatment is the norm. These Haitians are not only your neighbours. They are your relatives. Are they allowed to work in your banks, airports , hospitals ,, front desk in your hotels and resorts or vie for a Ms DR title?
Those born in the DR, some working the fields there for years and with grand children,, can they now get a birth certificate. Some have been born, died without a birth certificate and no death certificate. Are u aware that DR is the major contributor of full occupancy in our prison at a cost of millions?

Obviously the BVI needs to be a whole lot more selective and discriminating.

First of all I am a BVILander! Second of all, all that Haiti/DR BS has nothing to do with my in-laws coming for a visit and the repulsive way in which the immigration dealt with me and them. In case you don't know, there are good and bad in this world true but we don't have to treat everyone from the other Caribbean islands as if they are all garbage!

al that Haiti/DR BS has everything to do with u and your DR inlaws. If the victims were another hue, or if there was oil involved, there would be an embargo on the DR and your inlaws would have to stay put in DR with their inhumane Government . The United Nations has consistently listed the DR as a country which violates human rights. Amnesty International has found the DR guilty of genocide, child prostitution among some of the many abuses. You and your inlaws annoyance with the law and actions of the BVI Immigration is petty nonsense. The DR forcibly purge their country of dark skins at the point of a gun in the middle of the night... no time for Immigration.
There is a reason why the DR continues and will forever be useless to itself...Karma from the "BS" it perpetrates on innocents with the approval of those such as yourself..

He dear not say his name still in the system. He wants his card back so bad. Sam is a hypocrite this guy always talking about these island people this and that but when he wants something they good. Immigration officers needs to use their discretion a bit better and other officers need to adopt conceptual and technical skill in order to perform their duties. It come down to training and hiring the right persons for the job.

I will keep saying the breed of people that use to come from the other islands before might have come for the same reasons like the ones that come today, the US$. However, they sure were a better breed of people. Everyone loved their neighbor and lived like brothers and sisters. Some of these others that coming from these other islands today is a BAD breed (apologies to the very nice persons among them). Tortola and their US$ attracting the worst of the worst now. They want to walk on you, slap you, spit on you and want you to take shut up in your own country while government studying how to get the next dollar in their pocket. Hell, y'all couldn't look at the New York and U.S. Virgin Islands and see the mess there. Well so it go. Most of y'all government ain't no grass root BVIslanders so this is expected. They don't give a ............bout us. And they know most of the people who come here don't like here they just using the BVI. Talk about a country being destroyed rapidly. Wait man, soon total Annihilation of a breed. JAH KNOW! IT REAL HARD TO LOVE PEOPLE WHO AIN LOVE YOU. Come here with their aggression and colonising behaviour like the Caribs to the Arawaks and wan talk bout how we treat people. Mannnnn talk bout y'all selves first. Acting all innocent and like the damn people ain got reason. Sorry the innocent have to suffer for the guilty, y'all need to tell your country people to be more respective of themselves and others. Can't expect people to keep getting kick in the crouch and still standing straight!

Well while we on this topic about the Terrence B Lettsome Airport, who in God's name hiring all these rude unprofessional young people in Security? a few weeks ago on my way to Purto Rico when I arrived at the security check point I am still in shock as how I was approach by one of the Security Officer, He was very young clear complexion not forgetting a huge nose, no good morning, no smile just "give me your boarding pass "take off your shoes I felt so bad for the other passengers that was standing behind me in the line was just steering at me, I'm just saying I think who ever is hiring these young people need to be sure they get the proper customer service training because if the way that Officer approach me was not bad enough there were other Officers standing around giggling while the Officer on the x-ray machine screening with his cell phone in his hand, I think this country is going to hell in a basket my opinion.

Well..yes...When guest's are entering the country they should be treated as guest's, this should be, but however not so in all cases (true in some not in all cases)....As for Immigration Officials using their descretion which is such a huge factor in being an Ambassador for the country in which an Immigration Official is known as they are the first person a Tourist meets when entering the country....(descretion) this is not used unless there is something to be gained (trust me on that).....There are indeed many visitors indeed being discriminated against and being treated like garbage ...this however isn't a just now thing...this has been going on for yrs..Anyhow..,Really surprised someone has the gumption at least to make a issue about it...hummmmmm...and as for the comment about lets hope Mr. Hill does a better job than Mr. Jennings..Wow!!!(Chuckle)(Chuckle)(Chuckle)....those are some big shoes to fill, believe that..
