This announcement was made by Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) during his 2021 New Year’s Message to the territory.
According to the Premier, “The Government of the Virgin Islands is adamant on Going Green with no delay. In this vein your Government has secured the services of an energy consultant, Mr Henry Creque, to advise the Premier's Office on the way forward with clean energy...”
Hon Fahie said the plan is to replace VI’s fossil fuel use and further, Mr Creque is to ensure that by mid-2021, persons are using natural resources to sell to the grid at the BVI Electricity Corporation.
Details of contract not disclosed
It remains unclear the details of Creque’s contract and its duration, however, Premier Fahie has hinted that his services could transition into the 2022 Budget year.
“We must protect our environment at all costs and put measures in place to be the first island in the region to be fully operational on clean energy, thus respecting the environment. All these efforts will strongly assist in strengthening the 2022 Budget and beyond,” Hon Fahie said.
Mr Creaque, the son of former first lady, Lorna G. Smith was unsuccessful at being elected an At-Large Representative in the February 2019 General Elections in the Virgin Islands, under the National Democratic Party (NDP).
A month before the elections in January 2019, Creque resigned as Deputy General Manager of the BVIEC to pursue his political career, campaigning on renewable energy as a new economic pillar.
