ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands has been told to brace itself for showers tonight and throughout tomorrow due to a tropical wave, which is currently a couple of hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles.

A flash flood watch, which has been issued by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services for low-lying and flood prone areas in the Virgin Islands, is scheduled to take effect from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. tomorrow, Wednesday August 24, 2016.

At around 8:00 P.M. today, August 23, 2016, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) reported on its website that satellite images, surface observations, and radar from the Lesser Antilles indicate that a broad area of low pressure associated with a tropical wave—Invest99L, a couple of hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles has become a little better defined.

It also said that although environmental conditions are only marginally conducive for development, this system could become a tropical depression during the next day or two while it moves west-northwest at 15 to 20 mph near the Leeward Islands and the Greater Antilles.

“Environmental conditions could become more conducive later this week while the system moves near the southeastern and central Bahamas. Another Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate Invest 99L tomorrow, if necessary.”

Forecasters have advised that individuals from the islands of the northeastern Caribbean Sea to the Bahamas should continue to monitor the progress of this system. Gusty winds, heavy rains, and possible flash floods and mud slides could occur over portions of these areas regardless of tropical cyclone formation.

Efforts to reach DDM’s Director Sharleen S. Dabreo for further information were not successful.

The Department of Disaster Management said it will continue to monitor the systems and advise the public accordingly on its website at www.bviddm.com and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/bvi.ddm/

How could a department be so wrong majority of the time and still allow to exist? Don't these people know that to many false alarms will make people loose trust in their judgement and start to ignore anything they say. They should check multiple sources before they go blabbering their mouth.
