Health Surveillance Team Confirms One Case Of H1N1
“We have been vigilant over the past few months and have been stepping up our surveillance as reports of H1N1 have been confirmed within the Caribbean,” Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Ronald Georges told the Department of Information and Public Relations.
As a result of our increased vigilance we were able to intercept, confirm and treat the only case of H1N1 confirmed in the Territory to date. The carrier was a tourist who entered through the ports. The patient was treated and released,” Dr. Georges confirmed.
According to Dr. Georges the Ministry has a surveillance committee who works together to identify, track, educate and ensure that procedures and processes are in place to manage health emergencies.
“We have been tracking reported cases of flu within the community and can say with confidence that to date there are no other reported H1N1 cases within the Territory,” Dr. Georges said.
Practicing safe hygiene is vital and can assist in the prevention and transmission of influenza. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or use your elbow when coughing or sneezing. Safely dispose of used tissues and wash hands with soap and water after coughing and sneezing. It is also important to wash hands with soap before and after meal preparation, eating and using the toilet.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development is encouraging persons who experience flu-like symptoms to immediately seek medical attention. Adequate supplies of medicine are in supply at the Peebles Hospital Pharmacy to treat patients.
