ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Malik Aaron of Havers estate confessed to storing nearly one pound of cannabis in his bedroom and bathroom before officers executed a search warrant at his home and discovered the drug in April, 2013.

Aaron, 20, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug (cannabis) when he appeared before the Magistrate’s Court today, May 22, 2013

According to the allegations read by Senior Crown Counsel Valston Graham, during a search conducted at the defendant’s residence on April 16, 2013 between 5:30-6:00 A.M., Police allegedly found a quantity of 18 dime bags containing vegetable matter suspected to be cannabis. The items were found on a computer desk in a bedroom occupied by the defendant.

During their search, Police also allegedly found a plastic bag containing vegetable matter in a bathroom at the home.

Graham also said that Police showed all the items to Aaron before he was cautioned. He then allegedly admitted the substance belonged to him and officers told him that it was suspected to be cannabis.

Aaron was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis and taken to the Road Town Police Station where he was formally interviewed and allegedly admitted to possession of cannabis.

When weighed, the substance was found to be 221.6g with a combined street value of $2,216.

His attorney, Stephen Daniels, stated in mitigation that his client was a young person who lived with both parents and assisted in their car rental business. Further, he had no previous convictions and had taken full responsibility for the narcotics found by pleading guilty at the first opportunity that arose.

Daniels also requested that the court grant a non-custodial sentence under the circumstances and institute an appropriate fine. The attorney stated that it was his understanding that the cannabis discovered was for the defendant’s personal consumption.

Aaron was granted $60,000 signed bail and ordered to join the Sandy Lane Centre for drug counselling and testing pending his sentence hearing.

Magistrate Richards told the defendant that her fines are very heavy and the maximum allowed for the offence is $100,000. “I will not think twice to give [the maximum fine] to you.”
