Harneys wants school teachers computer trained for new term
However, Minister Walwyn stated that such an objective could not be achieved in such a short space of time but noted that Government plans to introduce Information Technology into the primary school’s curriculum.
“We are at the stage where every public/private school in this territory should have computers in the classroom, no question asked. It should not be left to the financial ability of the parents as to whether a child has access to and is able to learn how to use a computer,” insisted Managing Partner of Harneys BVI, Mrs Sheila George.
It was the occasion of the official opening ceremony of the Francis Lettsome Primary School’s Computer Laboratory today, October 30, 2013. The event was seen as not only a ceremony but rather about a partnership that has seen the fruition of the Information Technology facility being placed at a Primary School in the Virgin Islands.
“It is time and many have said past time that we put computers into the classrooms. In today’s environment technological literacy is a condition for practically every level of career ...” stated Mrs George.
Harneys adopted the Francis Lettsome Primary School in 2004.
It was stated by the Minister for Education and Culture, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn that government cannot do it on its own and called on the private sector to follow suit with Harneys to help. He also told the students of the Francis Lettsome Primary School they were lucky.
“We don’t have IT in the way that you have it here at Francis Lettsome We have computers that are being used here but Information Technology is not a part of the curriculum in the primary schools,” said Hon Walwyn.
Meanwhile, Mrs George also called for the introduction of Spanish as part of the primary schools’ curriculum.
Among those in the audience at the opening ceremony were Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour and Seventh District Representative, Dr The Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering and Eighth District Representative Honourable Marlon A. Penn.
Harneys pride themselves for being associated with the Francis Lettsome Primary School way before the Adopt-A-School Programme was brought on board.
“So for Harneys this is not just any selected school on the Adopt-A-School Programme, it’s a place that is very important to a lot of us, a place we are committed to and a place that we want to ensure is successful,” Mrs George stated.
Over the years, the law firm has done a number of things for the school including the sponsoring of art competitions. It was said the company is currently awaiting some issues to be sorted out to allow it to place some 3200 books at the school’s resource centre.
Harneys commitment to the Francis Lettsome Primary School is to see that it becomes a model school for innovation and teaching. “…and we commit in whatever way possible to help it achieve its mission,” assured Mrs George.
