EAST END, Tortola, VI – Harneys, who recently donated 20 computers to the Francis Lettsome Primary School, has challenged the Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn to ensure that primary school teachers are trained in the use of computers before the beginning of the next school term.

However, Minister Walwyn stated that such an objective could not be achieved in such a short space of time but noted that Government plans to introduce Information Technology into the primary school’s curriculum.

“We are at the stage where every public/private school in this territory should have computers in the classroom, no question asked. It should not be left to the financial ability of the parents as to whether a child has access to and is able to learn how to use a computer,” insisted Managing Partner of Harneys BVI, Mrs Sheila George.

It was the occasion of the official opening ceremony of the Francis Lettsome Primary School’s Computer Laboratory today, October 30, 2013. The event was seen as not only a ceremony but rather about a partnership that has seen the fruition of the Information Technology facility being placed at a Primary School in the Virgin Islands.

“It is time and many have said past time that we put computers into the classrooms. In today’s environment technological literacy is a condition for practically every level of career ...” stated Mrs George.

Harneys adopted the Francis Lettsome Primary School in 2004.

It was stated by the Minister for Education and Culture, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn that government cannot do it on its own and called on the private sector to follow suit with Harneys to help. He also told the students of the Francis Lettsome Primary School they were lucky.

“We don’t have IT in the way that you have it here at Francis Lettsome We have computers that are being used here but Information Technology is not a part of the curriculum in the primary schools,” said Hon Walwyn.

Meanwhile, Mrs George also called for the introduction of Spanish as part of the primary schools’ curriculum.

Among those in the audience at the opening ceremony were Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour and Seventh District Representative, Dr The Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering and Eighth District Representative Honourable Marlon A. Penn.

Harneys pride themselves for being associated with the Francis Lettsome Primary School way before the Adopt-A-School Programme was brought on board.

“So for Harneys this is not just any selected school on the Adopt-A-School Programme, it’s a place that is very important to a lot of us, a place we are committed to and a place that we want to ensure is successful,” Mrs George stated.

Over the years, the law firm has done a number of things for the school including the sponsoring of art competitions. It was said the company is currently awaiting some issues to be sorted out to allow it to place some 3200 books at the school’s resource centre.

Harneys commitment to the Francis Lettsome Primary School is to see that it becomes a model school for innovation and teaching. “…and we commit in whatever way possible to help it achieve its mission,” assured Mrs George.

News flash! Teacher have actually been using computers for years. I'm sure that this is true for the teachers of that primary school as well. So please, don't insult the profession.

Much thanks. The nerve of these people. What she needs to be headlining with is to implore other businesses to sponsor these computers AND programs/ Internet subscriptions to our various institutions so that our well informed energetic young teachers would be compellingly motivated to step up their games in the classrooms.

She's done exactly what she needs to do. Now what you need to do is to go find a seat and encourage ALL of your colleagues to equip themselves with the skills to pass on to the youngsters once other business leaders catch on to this and follow suit so these computers are fully utilised, and quit the negativity. If you can't manage this simple task, then you need to be out grazing with what would clearly be your kind.

As an alumna of FLPS and a current employee of Harneys this is indeed a very proud moment for me. Corporate Social Responsibility is seemingly absent from the agendas of many of the corporations and firms that operate within the BVI. I urge the onlookers to follow the charge of Harneys, Rotary, LIME and the others who I may not be able to name - by participating in initiatives such as the one, the subject of this article. It is high time that we stop talking and start doing...

    Go Team Harneys!

Most current teachers are FULLY able to use computers already. Many have been begging and waiting for the chance to use computers in their classes. Please stop insulting the teachers and ask the minister to provide the services needed.
