ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- As part of its long-standing support for Francis Lettsome Primary School (FLPS), law firm Harneys supported the launch of a science fair for grades K through 6.

FLPS students participated in the February 6, 2015 science fair titled “Building a culture of science, mathematics and technology for the 21st Century.” Students demonstrated a number of scientific concepts in experiments that ranged from sorting and counting M& M’s, researching the type of milk which makes the best blob, and finding out if eggs can bounce to the ever popular erupting volcano. Some students also demonstrated their Spanish language skills in their projects.

“Science fairs give students the opportunity to study a topic that interests them.” said Principal Deborah James. “They are an exciting component of a science curriculum and touch on a variety of educational environments”.

Grade 4, teacher Mrs. Susan Gregg spearheaded the event with the support of the Principal James, Staff and Stephanie Russ Penn (parent and HLSCC science instructor).

The wide range of projects included poster presentations, display models and live experiments from individual and group participants of grades K through 6 were judged based on criteria for Outstanding, Excellent or Good Project Work.

Members of the Mathematics and Science Department of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Keith Kassarie, Lucille Skelton, Lenette Lewis, Kerry Ann Brown, Demario Williams and HLSCC student K’mari Fahie judged the event.

Felice Swapp, Chief Operating Officer at Harneys stated: “I believe a science fair project is one of the best learning experiences, a student can undertake and am very proud of the student participants. I am also very proud of our partnership with FLPS as together, we can help educate
and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and science-literate citizens."

Felice, together with Chandra Benjamin and Shonda Leacock of Harneys, assisted with the awarding of certificates and prizes to each participant.

Ruth Frazer, FLPS Liaison Officer/Ministry of Education Representative and Linda Leonard, HR Relationship Executive at Harneys also attended the ceremony.

Harneys’ support for FLPS is now in its 11th year. The firm has improved the school facilities, purchased playground equipment, sponsored enrichment activities and volunteered at school events.

Supporting education and youth programmes is at the heart of Harneys’ CSR activities. The firm believes that investing in young people is the cornerstone of building a strong future for the Virgin Islands.
