Harneys appoints 2 British Virgin Islander lawyers to Professional Development Programme
Associates Tamara and Kimberly will spend the next two years on rotation through each of the firm’s departments gaining high-level exposure to the full gamut of BVI and international legal practice.
Managing Partner Sheila George said: “It gives me great pleasure to welcome Kimberly and Tamara to Harneys and to our Professional Development Programme. They are both promising young lawyers and I wish them every success in the programme and beyond. This year, 2015, marks the 15th anniversary of Harneys’ Professional Development Programme and it is fitting to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment as a firm to hiring and providing opportunities for outstanding British Virgin Islander lawyers and professionals.”
Harneys’ Professional Development Programme was established in 2000 and is the only legal training programme of its kind in the BVI. “The programme is modelled after the English system of training contracts, and since inception it has provided 26 newly-qualified lawyers with a strong foundation on which to build their legal careers,” said Training Manager Chandra Benjamin, who further noted that several PDP graduates have gone on to become partners at Harneys and other law firms in the territory.
This year’s entrants join Harneys not only with legal qualifications but also with relevant experience at other professional services firms in the BVI.
Kimberly Seagojo attained her LLB with Upper Second Class Honours from Birmingham City University and completed the Bar Professional Training Course at Manchester Metropolitan University in July 2014. Kimberly’s professional experience includes the role of fund administrator at TMF (BVI) Limited and summer employment at the BVI Financial Services Commission, Legal and Enforcement Division.
Tamara obtained her LLB (Hons) from Durham University in 2012 and was a BPTC Scholar Recipient from the Honourable Society of Middle Temple, where she is also a member. Tamara completed her Post Graduate Diploma of Law at Northumbria University in 2013. Prior to joining Harneys Tamara worked as an Associate at Forbes Hare Barristers and Solicitors, practicing in the areas of civil litigation and non-contentious probates.
In addition to the practical experience gained through rotations, the Professional Development Programme also entails mentorship and in-house training designed to help newly qualified lawyers develop the legal skills, commercial awareness, and business, finance and management skills essential to a successful legal career.
Kimberly’s mentor will be Ayana Hull, who is a senior associate in Harneys’ funds department. During her first seat, Kimberly will work closely with Philip Graham, partner in charge of Harneys’ BVI funds practice and a member of the firm’s PDP committee.
Tamara’s mentor will be Kimberly Crabbe-Adams, a past participant in the Professional Development Programme who is now an associate in Harneys’ litigation department. Tamara’s first supervisor will be Tanya Cassie-Parker, a partner in Harneys’ BVI banking and finance practice.
