ROAD TOWN, Tortola VI - The eight sitting of the second session of the second House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands should be informative when it meets today, Thursday April 25, 2013 assuming the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) Government answers the questions.

Two Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Opposition Members; Honourable Julian Fraser RA, Representative of the Third District and Honourable Andrew A. Fahie, Representative of the First District, will fire off some 65 questions at the Government front bench.

Controversy erupted at the last sitting when Third District representative Hon. Fraser was denied by the Speaker of Parliament Honourable Ingrid Moses-Scatliffe to allow some topical questions on the order paper. This news site, through its many sources, was able to unearth the questions not allowed by the Speaker and had them published.

The variety of questions for today's sitting range from information about court claims, whether this administration is playing by the rule of public tender when it comes to projects, the cost of Craft's Alive and Manse Road projects, trade with the USVI, the cost to Government of Sage Utilities Holdings' contract at the Government-owned Baughers Bay Water Plant, and repairing or replacing of the starting gate at Ellis Thomas Downs.

While the well over 65 questions on the order paper will be of interest to most, the agenda also has some 8 Bills to obtain their Second and Third Readings. Some of them include a Medical (Amendment) Act 2013, a Youth Courts (Amendment) Act 2013, a Virgin Islands Special Trust (Amendment) Act 2013 and a Trade Marks Act 2013, among others.

The Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark H. Vanterpool will also be laying on the table of the House the Telephone Services Management Unit Annual Reports for 2010 and 2011 as well as the BVI Electricity Corporation 2007 Annual Report.

Many persons will be also listening out for the section of Any Other Business where legislators can speak freely on any topic and most often use that time to lash out at the media.

The House of Assembly meeting will be broadcast live on CBN Channel 51 starting at 10 A.M. from the Chambers in Road Town.

Most politicians take parliament as a public forum to preen their feathers! They always know what is good for us, even if most of us disagree. If politicians know what is right, perhaps they can explain how we got deeper and deeper in the bog of crime, education system gone to the dogs and locals are second class citizens in the BVI.

I think it is important for transparency that these questions be answered and the public is informed. I also think it is ironic that Fraser is one asking considering he was not so transparent himself with his projects in the 3rd.
But when I read statements by Vanterpool like "we will listen to people at the public meetings but we will not be detered from our goals" or (paraphrasing from a newspaper article 2 wks ago) that "we can't tell the public everything to protect them", this casts a shadow on their transparency and lack of democratic process. How dare they assume the public is not intelligent enough to understand what is going on. Protect them from what? the fact there are deals happening? thank goodness for the media. Rightly or wrongly, at least they bring issues to the public.

The only time this man appears in the BVI & gets major multimillion dollar contracts quietly is when the NDP is in power. He got a good deal in their 2003-2007NDP's Administration & here he is again & not a man says a word about this questionable character & the NDP's questionable actions. What a hypocritic country.
