Hannah’s pip Stingrays to open SCBBC Intermediate League account
The League opened with words of encouragement for the players from the Honourable Julian Fraser R.A. who implored them to play with determination, discipline and skill, quipping “what happens on the court stays on the court”.
He also had supportive words for Steve Parillon who was a guest Referee and Karl Scatliffe, the Coach of the HLSCC Stingrays, as well as being President and Vice President of the Hoop It Up Foundation. “Keep doing what you are doing,” he said, referring to the sterling work the pair is doing for the Youths and basketball development.
Organiser Milton McLean also explained to the players the need for discipline in their games and urged them to be on time and well dressed.
Game 1 saw the Philippinas rout Real Tool with a fast flowing passing game that saw them run out 61-34 winners.
Right from the start the Philippinas entertained the crowd with superb passing moves and with a little more shooting accuracy would have had a cricket score against their younger opponents.
Lucky Reyes finished with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists while Louie Pobleta had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 5 assists. Triston Inasanto added 8 points and Allan Vercel 7.
For Real Tool, Nathan Rodney scored 11 points with 21 rebounds and both Gianni Maduro and Llewellyn Dasent had 8.
The second game of the night saw the new look HLSCC Stingrays face Hannah’s and the College boys more than held their own against the experienced local boys for much of the game before succumbing late in the 4th quarter and going down 54-58.
The Stingrays were up 14-11 at the end of the 1st quarter and were up 26-22 at the half way point. The end of the 3rd saw them lead 43-35, but then Hannah’s mounted a comeback.
The scores were level at 49-49 with 3.44 left in the final period and as the Stingrays began to lose their shape and discipline Hannah’s took a lead they would not lose to run out winners.
Mikey Joseph and Kervin Jones both had free throw attempts that would have leveled the scores, but into the last 60 seconds Damian Hooper put the game to bed for Hannahs.
Hooper finished with 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Marshall Thomas added 14 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 assists whilst Paul Cinta notched 13 points and 18 rebounds.
For HLSCC, Mikey Joseph top scored with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Rushawn Johnson had 13 points, Kervin Jones 8 with 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists and Daniel Findlay finished with 8 points.
