Haiti President Michel Martelly departed the country on Tuesday for a visit to Washington, DC, the National Palace announced in a statement.

The purpose of the visit was to attend a ceremony of officers graduating from the Inter-American Defense College, which includes four Haitian professionals, the National Palace said.

The regional college operates under the auspices of the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Defense Board.

It’s the first visit by Martelly to Washington since Haiti’s President visited the United States’ capital in February to meet with President Barack Obama.

That meeting included talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry.
