Maulana Saeed Imam Shiraz yesterday disavowed any knowledge of who hid guns and ammunition at the Masjid-ul-Muttaqeen in Cunupia, saying “we are truly stunned by this find”.

Five firearms and an estimated 50 rounds of ammunition were found in the ceiling of the Munroe Road mosque about 8.30AM yesterday by workers.

Police said workers were undertaking routine duties at the mosque when they observed something in the ceiling of the building. The object was examined and it turned out to be several large garbage bags.

Upon further examination, workers were shocked when they found two shotguns, an assault rifle and two hand held firearms. A quantity of ammunition, including live rounds of shotgun shells, was also found and seized in the bags.
