Gunmen rob Riteway East End

Riteway East End was robbed of cash by four heavily armed masked bandits tonight, November 24, 2016. Photo: Internet Source
MAJOR BAY, Tortola, VI- Gun crimes continue to plague the territory as this evening, November 24, 2016 heavily armed men pounced on Riteway East End.

According to reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online, at around 9:00 P.M. four masked men brandishing firearms walked into the store located in Major Bay, East End, demanding money.

The bandits reportedly took all the cash out of the cash registers and also forced the supervisor to open the store's safe and hand over all the cash that was in it.

No one was injured in the incident that took place as the store was about to close.

The robbers then reportedly fled in a boat that was at the dock behind the establishment.

It is not clear at this time how much money the bandits carted off with.

Information requested from the Royal Virgin Islands Police (RVIPF) on the incident was not received up to time of publication.

Corruption breeds crime, which breeds fear, which breeds more corruption and crime. When some in the NDP displays thuggish behaviour on the ports project and the million dollar wall and get away with it then you know you have a lawless country. Not that the VIP is any better Either we are a country of laws or one where crime and lawlessness rules.

If guns continue to come in there will be crimes. For years the police department were tip off of how some of the guns were entering the country nothing has been done and today it is out of control . Sorry to say but some in high position get rich out of not doing the right thing. To help keep the guns out the have to search these all boats that is coming in the BVI waters. If crimes continue like this MARK will have nothing to brag about how many tourists expect to enter our shores. It is about time they give the customs, immigrations and the police department the tools to help combats the guns reaching the streets.

Me, I need extra money but I will go to a hotel and wash dishes and sweep floors before I take a security job here. These thugs is brazen and bold face with their s..t. Mark my words, they are going to rob a supermarket full of shoppers and innocent people is going to get hurt or worse.

What is fueling the rise in violent, especially gun crime, and property crimes in VI? Is it unemployment? High and prolonged unemployment come with huge opportunity cost for both the national economy and individuals. Unemployed individuals are not contributing to the national production output (GDP). Further, the individual cost of unemployment is also high. High unemployment among individuals can lead to health and psychological issues, familiy violence, other social issues (divorce, child abandonment), and increased violent and property crimes. Studies have shown a direct link between high unemployment and rising crime. The big question is what is the root cause of unemployment, if any, and secondly what are the solutions?

Is unemployment cause by 1) lack of job creation and job opportunities, 2) poor economic growth, 3)lack of training, education and skills for available jobs, 4) disdain for certain jobs due to rising standard of living and quality of life ......etc. Undoubtedly, crime should not pay and those that commit crime should suffer the consequences. But the VI cannot just jail its way out of the crime wave/problem. Other investment and solutions are needed. Some solutions include 1)improving education and training, 2) investing effectively in human capital to meet job opportunities, 3) improving and diversifying the economic base, 4)improving job creation ( low and high skill), 5) recreating a culture of work, 6) reducing the need for instant gratification (got to have it now), 6)attaining the standard of living seen on TV takes time and preparation......etc.

The community created the problem and it must solve the problem. Increasing violent and property crimes exact a high cost on the community's quality of life. Solving the issue must involve the whole community, ie, churches, schools, social organizations, non governmental organizations (NGO), government, families, law enforcement.....etc. From afar, it appears that crime may be at crisis level that may be paralyzing the community. Rising crime is increasing the cost of living, i.e., increasing cost of security(physical security, technology), rising prices......etc. Both short-term and long-term solutions are needed. An adhoc crime task force comprising a cross-section of the community is needed. The bottom line is that rising violent and property crime will stagnate economic growth and sustainability, eroding/stifling/stagnating the quality of life and standard of living that residents have grown accustomed to.

@Online Now, E. Leonard posed a question asking if the increase in crime can be attributed to unemployment. Would you agree that there is difference between a question and a statement. I read the comment several times and to me it does not say definitively that unemployment is contributing to rising crime or that these criminals commit the crime because they were unemployed. To keep it real, I'm a fan of E. Leonard. That aside my comment is based on the written statement. By the way, any thoughts on what is causing the rising crime.

Are the local thugs/criminals/gang emulating what they see on TV? Has immigration contributed to the rise in violent and property crime? Is greater and more effective screening needed on whom is permitted to immigrate and settle in the BVI? Do passport truly represent who people are(it is open secret of the fraud. Deportees from US and Canada)?

Are police records a true reading /record of the holder? Are the thugs home-grown? Is unemployment the true cause of rising crime? Is a changing attitude towards the world of work the cause? Is laziness the cause? Is lacked of effective education and training a contributing cause? Are people expecting big jobs and big money for jobs they are have not been adequately trained for? Is the need to have everything now attitude contributing to crime? Are others, i.e., families and friends aiding and abetting these thugs?

Is prison a deterrent to crime? Is being labeled a jail bird a deterrent? Is doing time glamorized? Is just flinging the thugs in jail the panacea for the crime problem? No. Is economic growth at risk as happened in St. Croix as a result of crime? Does anyone remember Fountain Valley? Does the community need to arrest the violent and property crime wave before it goes beyond the point of no return? Is the community willing to give up some civil liberties to arrest crime?

Wow! These are real touching a nerve problems. The crime wave and gun as the weapon of choice is some serious sh...t. These thugs making people haul in early. The police haul in early too. As the Aubrey Forbes sang on his popular CD Ting to Talk, after 6:00 p.m. the police haul in off the street. The police took an oath to serve and protect and they need to be out and about the islands showing their presence to prevent and deter crime, and to suprise and arrest criminals. Policing is not a typical desk job; police/ need to be out on patrol in cars, bicycles, motor cycles and foot.
    • Eagle and Buffalo (25/11/2016, 08:50) Like (16) Dislike (0) Reply
The assumption is that these thugs are terrorizing the community for quick money because they do not want to work. There is some truth to that. But we also need to delve into how the BVI got from such a safe and easy going community to now this hell hole that has people living on edge. Agree with you that we need to drill down to the root cause of the problem. A problem cannot be solved if the root cause is not identified. Just treating the symptom is not the ideal solution. Agree also that unemployment and underemployment can cause an increase in crime. Some suggest that the thugs left in a boat so they could not be unemployed. Well, until they are positively identified that is just speculation.

No doubt the BVI has changed. Government borrows money to recklessly spend it on extravagant luxuries. Well, the profligacy may not be extravagant luxury but needed projects. On the the other hand, residents commit crime to live up to the standard of living they see on TV. BVI we must arrest the the problem now. Let's soar as eagles, not dive off the cliff as buffaloes.

@E Leonard, my friend, boy you created a hot and lively discussion on violent and property(VP) crime by (1)asking what is fueling the rise in VP crime and (2) if the rise in VP is tied to unemployment( people are unemployed for various reasons). Some tied the questions to bring misleading and making excuses for the behaviour of criminals. Others want to explore and fix the root cause(s) of VP crime. Others again laid the cause of VP at the feet of the community and exhorting the community, i.e., police, schools, churches, families, government, social clubs, NGOs.......etc to fix it. My two pence is that the criminals are responsible for their laziness, wanting fast money, criminal behaviour, terrorizing the community, doing the time if found guilty........ etc and undoubtedly should pay the price for their crimes.

Nonetheless, as others have suggested, the root cause of VP must be explored and eradicated. There are root cause(s) to every problem. As Ed stated, the community cannot wash its hands on the cause of this problem and must also take responsibility for and fix it; there are no Pilates here. Were our children born criminals? No. Where did they learn the criminal behaviour from? Community. The discussion is sizzling and others should weigh in with their opinions, not just hitting the Like or Dislike buttons. On a final note, E. Leonard is more than capable of defending his blog if he so desires but IMO he was neither misleading nor making excuses for the criminals' behaviour. But Crap may be of the opinion that he and I are always dishing crap. Lol. Moreover, the RVIPF is not clairvoyant and needs our help in solving crimes. Persons with info should not hesitate to share it with the police.

@ shark: just point of information: there are non-black from Europe and USA involved in the dope trade(what you plan to do with them) we have non-blacks in BVI laundering money(what are your plans for them)...i understand your perspective about your caribbean race; but most of the shooting are done by our own people(locals gunning down locals)....the country gone to far now and I submit it have worse to get!!!...i agree with you and we do need stricter border control but those criminals for overseas coming here with false documents(those with criminal records)...this is how slack our country is;we had persons working at our port under false documents and I submit some the police here are questionable(some before the court house all now for dope & other criminal offences)and I bet my gold fish more of them on the force with the same pattern....give the blacks a break because the whites up in here doing white collar crimes but in eyes of some of us the white folks are the best thing since slice bread(crime is crime and a criminal is criminal)keep the faith

@Wize Up, real talk. We conditioned to believe the White is right and righteous, Brown stick around and if you Black get back. We are piling (self hatred) on the Caribbean Africa diaspora and glorifying people of Caucasion descent. Lots of people immigrating ( Black, White, Asian, Hispanic ) are immigrating to the BVI using false documents. They may be going as X Squared but in fact their name may be Y Cubed. The BVI has to do a better job of screening people coming into the territory. That said, we cannot lay all of our crime problems on immigrants. Many of the young thugs are home grown in ghe community and villages.

No doubt rising crime, particularly gun crime, is a pox on our once tranquil and low crime community. And we need to take back the community by arresting the crime. But in arresting crime, we cannot just treat or react to the symptoms; we must look at the root cause(s). Criminals have to pay for their crimes. It seems the focus is being placed on Millenials and younger generations and it should for they statistically are committing most of the crimes. But as others have asked, where did the young criminals cop the criminal behaviour and attitude from? As E. Leonard and others noted, the community is the genesis of the criminal behaviour. Who raised the criminals? Is it the community? Yes. Thus, the community must arrest the problem. Just putting the criminals in jail alone will not arrest the problem. It comes down to rooting out the root cause(s), e.g., unemployment, education and training, lack of parenting, laziness, media.ingluence......etc. The cause of this problem is in the mirror and the image must be believed. We can pretend all we want that all the blame should be laid on the " yung uns". The community has to step up and take charge, holding the criminals it created and itself accountable.
