Gun shots fired in Long Look, Residents fearful to report
It was approximately 02:41 hours when the rapid shots woke many out of their deep sleep, yet no one thought it best to summon or alert 911 or the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF). This was confirmed by Public Relations Officer of the RVIPF Ms. Dianne Drayton by this news site yesterday when asked if any such report was made.
“I can now confirm that there were no reports made to the Police about gunshots fired this morning (January 6) or last night,” said Ms. Drayton after making several checks of the RVIPF systems and consultations with senior officers.
However, when contacted, several residents in the Nothingham Estate area said that the shots were indeed fired but for the most part, they said that they were scared to call 911 as they did not want their phone numbers recorded or traced by the law enforcement institution. Residents were also very fearful to give information or their names to this news site and only agreed to speak on condition of anonymity.
“I was scared, my children did not go back to sleep the small one even went under the bed in fear,” said one resident.
Citing that they were also surprised to have learnt that there was no official report in the RVIPF system of the incident, some residents of the area said that there are at least three Police officers residing in the area and at least one was known to have been at home at the time.
“If their own police officer were home and heard it and didn’t report it, what me doing saying that I reporting then the next thing something happen they trace my number and calling me to give testimony in court if something should come out of it?” reasoned one resident.
Several residents have expressed concerns about the apparent escalation of guns in the Territory which according to them, the RVIPF allegedly has not been visibly attempting to curb importation.
“This place is becoming a Gun City and I am so sacred because at the slightest thing man shooting and not cuffing out, man shoot and not cussing, man shooting and not turning away from a quarrel and this is a very serious thing that the Commissioner of Police Mr David Morris and his top brass need to seriously look into,” said a resident.
Another said, “I bet you can find more guns in the BVI than machete. If you go to certain people Facebook pages you will see what I am talking about.” The resident alleged that many license and non-licence firearm holders can be seen posting photos on their Facebook pages banishing guns of all sorts.
“Them boys got guns far more better that the BVI police dem and that’s why they (Police) wouldn't even think of trying to approach some of them,” the resident further alleged.

I really doubt that the police are afraid of untrained gun holders. Ask the guys that threw the girl off the balcony...oh ya, you can't!
The gun laws are not made for the criminals they going have their gun anyway the law is against law abiding citzens from attaining a gun to protect themselves. We need laws in this country to empower the masses not the as..s instead of being scared in your house give us the rights to bare arms to protect ourselves.we need to wake up and smell the coffee this is the real world the streets will always be fill with guns the guys out there are fear less but we are fearful to enact laws to conteract this.
YAWN... What? you think these guns just coming on the boats and through the mail? Especially after Edwards them case?
If the community are to have any faith in the police response when they are brave enough to report, then there needs to be professional and immediate police action which also protects the reporter.
