THREAD FALLS, Tortola, VI - Officers of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force Armed Tactical Team seized a gun and a large quantity of ammunition at a road check in Thread Falls within an hour of the report of gunshots in the Brandywine Bay area late last night.

When approached, the lone scooter rider threw a bag containing the illegal items in the bush overlooking Sea Cows Bay and sped off. Officers are working to identify the rider. Shortly after, officers were called to respond to a 311 call of the sound of gunshots in the Brandywine Bay area.

A vehicle was found at a standstill on the eastern side of Brandywine Bay with several bullet holes and a unresponsive male in the driver’s seat. The male was pronounced dead at the scene.

Commissioner of Police, Michael B. Matthews reiterated his commitment to see that persons who choose to carry or use firearms be brought to justice and made to bear grave consequences.

"We simply cannot be everywhere at all times but predators within our community who carry firearms will eventually be identified and charged. Firearms can be seized and arrests made fairly quickly with help from the public," he said. "We will continue to use intelligence-led stop and search armed road checks to target these criminals and remove illegals firearms such as last night’s seizure from our streets."

He also made another appeal to parents.

"I call on parents especially. It is young people involved in these terrible crimes. Do whatever it takes to protect your family and spare yourself the heartache by reporting anything suspicious; anything you know or suspect about illegal activity in and around your premises. Do what is necessary to save lives."

Questions thou? Was he taking them to or from someone in that area. Was he going to target someone in that area. That’s not a route that’s taken randomly. Glad they got them off the streets now we need him off the streets.

Even if the cops can’t catch them in the patrol cars, they should have dashboard cameras to capture the vehicle and plate of the person they are chasing. People here are using their own cameras to take pictures of anything they want to, so why can’t the police. Come on now! Patrol the streets 24/7, be visible all the time, bring community policing to every neighborhood. I absolutely NEVER SEE POLICE where I live. Visibility is crucial to combat crime, it’s not rocket science you know.
