CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI – Persons are encouraged to come out today April 20, 2013 to witness activities being done by Green VI at Cane Garden Bay in observance of Earth Day 2013.

Executive Director of Green VI, Charlotte McDevitt, appearing on the Umoja radio show on April 18, 2013 said, “Earth Day is all about celebrating the Earth, what we have and saying ‘this is what we’re doing to look after it’.”

She said the organisation has been holding celebrations for the last three years to show their solidarity for Earth Day and is expecting to have persons come by this year to give presentations in this regard.

“For me it’s so encouraging,” she noted, “it’s people from businesses, it’s people from communities, it’s individuals… everyone and it’s lovely.”

Activities are expected to commence around 11 A.M. with glass blowing demonstrations at the Glass Studio at Green VI followed by talks being held at Myett’s at around 12:30P.M. There will also be games and activities for children in what is expected to be a family fun day type of event as well.

There will also be a performance by Michael Bean as well as other activities including a raffle competition with several great prizes.

All proceeds collected for the day are expected to go toward the cause of recycling initiatives in the Virgin Islands.

McDevitt noted that climate change was not a debatable issue anymore and added that it affects island states the most.

The Territory recently witnessed the implementation of a Go-Green initiative by WorldHouse Caribbean in partnership with several retailers which sought to reduce the use of plastic bags at checkout counters and increase the usage of reusable bags along with increasing awareness of environmental hazards around the Virgin Islands.

Persons are now expected to pay an additional 15cents for plastic bags as a deterrent to their usage and this has come under considerable debate around the Territory.

Earth Day is officially observed on Monday, April 22, 2013 around the world.

how about helping to recycle glass that ends up in the coast mangroves, or learning a new skill, or being creative with the new possiblities. How about just caring about the environment and supporting someone else's sincere and creative efforts... why does it always have to be "what's in it for me?". This IS for local people if you choose to get involved. What a moo moo.
