ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – On another wet and windy night on Wednesday January 25, 2012, at the A.O. Shirley Grounds, a Collin Green hat trick inspired a sloppy One Love to a 5-0 victory over Old Madrid that leapfrogged them into third place in the National League.

Rain showers during the day had made the playing surface particularly tricky and both teams struggled to control the ball and many an intended pass failed to find its target during a largely forgettable first half.

Although Collin Green did eventually break the dead lock the 45-minutes of play was far from action packed, punctuated with the occasional foray forward by both teams and a series of niggling tackles that broke up what flow there was.

Old Madrid’s keeper, Hanif James, was in fact an early casualty of one clumsy challenge from Green. After several moments he was carried from the field and unable to return. Kenrick Grant took over in goal and Green was booked by referee Carl Barrett.

At least the opening goal was the result of some slick passing from One Love which resulted in a through ball to green who evaded the challenge from Franklyn James and beat the advancing Grant to slide the ball home.

At half time One Loves new Coach, Marc Savage had some harsh words for his players who he felt were definitely under achieving despite the playing conditions.

Savage has been released from playing with the Wolues following damage to knee ligaments and has taken up the reins with his new team just before the transfer window closes.

“I told them it’s a simple game, pass the ball and you will get chances.”

His words certainly worked as the Jamaicans put four more unanswered goals past Grant.

Carl Guwart scored inside 5 minutes of the restart and then after a spell of constant pressure Gavin Watson added a third.

Garnett Feron had a clear cut chance to reduce the deficit from a corner by James, but couldn’t keep his header down.

Midfield maestro, Sheldon Harry, battled hard to keep Old Madrid alive, but with the defense tiring Greens pace and agility finally finished them off as he fired home twice to finish the scoring and complete his first hat trick of the season.

“I feel really good,” commented Green. “I’ve been training hard and tonight it paid off!”

Savage whilst happy to see his new charges walk away with all 3 points saw plenty of work has still be done. “We started off slow we had to wait until the second half to get going. W e could have done a lot better than the five goals, but as the players get to play more together you will start to see some proper results.”

The top four of the Islanders, the Wolues, One Love and the Sugar Boyz have opened up a small gap at the top of the National League standings but the coming weekend throws up some intriguing match ups.

VG United should be confident of getting a win against the winless Haitians whilst the Islanders face the Ballstars who have got their season back on track with successive victories.

On Sunday, the Sugar Boyz face Old Madrid and One Love will look to continue their run of form against the Panthers. Over in Virgin Gorda the Wolues face a stiff challenge to their championship credentials with a tough game against the revamped Lucian Stars.

By Monday morning, there won’t be new League Leaders, but there could be three teams back in the mix for the Championship.
