ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) says the Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) is willing to assist with some of the outbound transportation costs for terminated expats who lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We don't owe any assistance, but we are a caring country... if these persons want to go somewhere and they don't have the means to do it and they approach government, are you willing to help us charter a plane? Of course, we have to consider it," Hon Wheatley said on the Tuesday, July 14, 2020, edition of the Honestly Speaking show.

Gov't has an obligation to help - Hon Wheatley

Hon Wheatley further said, "We are willing to meet them halfway or something," in response to questions from Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline regarding what assistance the government is willing to provide.

"As a government, I think it's our obligation to assist those persons, they are not strangers, these persons have been amongst us for some period of time," Hon Wheatley further noted.

He said at this point, the VI government has not made arrangements with home countries to facilitate or charter any fights to collect their citizens.

"Persons haven't really come forward as yet and say ok, I'm ready to go now... it's only been a few days ago [announcement] so persons have to think it over, do some interspection and really ask themselves what is the best thing for me to do right now."

World still in crisis

He reminded that the world is still in a crisis and government is not looking to turn people into criminals for losing their jobs in the pandemic.

On Friday, July 10, 2020, Hon Wheatley announced in the House of Assembly (HoA) that terminated expats will have to leave the Territory if they are unable to find new employment and do not qualify for a work permit renewal.

"We can't treat them like total strangers now and say go your way, how you get there, you get there, we don't care," Hon Wheatley said on the Honestly Speaking show.

I don’t need nothing more that my Severance pay after waiting for 3 months, if you want to extend the laid off time they should have given us a option to hop out at 3 month which was the original laid of time, It is very unfair for a person have work in their home country for over 5 year go look to their country for anything, so we need what we worked for to go home with, BVI making a bunch of quick stupid decision. GIVE a the Island them opportunity to cash out this company if they want and if they are not planning to return cash that out of Social Security Too, because leaving opens up door for any possible. Because the government Flip flopping every second of the day.

That why the cases kept increasing in America....There is a scientific research report out there stating that the Virus is real, but its weak and useless without the 5G radiation it gets its strength and energy from 5G radiation...

'Expats' come from a myriad of racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Why on earth is everyone here assuming the expats that need to go home are 'island people'? The height of ignorance to the point where it's almost amusing. So the caucasian, asian, indian, African, Filipino etc can stay but those from right here in the Caribbean need to leave? Smh.

It is very thoughtful of the government to help. It is sensible for one to want to leave if they are unable to cope financially. It is a matter of time that they will have to come back to carryout their work which is what helps to build the country. Government understands that and so does the population.

You not used to working? Equilibrium will take place, that's what will happen. Some businesses will close; the strongest and most necessary ones will survive. Skill sets will have to be strengthened and all these people who run around thinking that they have degrees and really don't know much of anything will have to learn how to do their jobs or be replaced. The education system will have to become strong again; corruption in government will have to cease or the BVi will fail. People will have to start looking inwards and not towards pastors who don't know much more than them, yet rob them of 10% of their earnings to pay themselves and upkeep of social halls aka churches. God needs no one's money. So we all better be ready to change because a shift is taking place, whether we like it or not.

What about work permit holders who are trying to return? When will they be allowed in?
  • So what about the bond? (18/07/2020, 12:09) Like (4) Dislike (0) Reply
Aren't employers required to put up a bond for persons on workpermit? Couldn't those funds be used to assist persons in returning home? The government is supposed to have money holding for that reason so it's not charity for the Government to assist persons in returning home. It's proper use of funds. Workpermit holders or their employers should have paid in advance for such a contingency. Unless, of course, we stopped collecting and holding the bond monies in order to give local employers a break. Or maybe that's not what the bond is for. Or maybe it doesn't last. If so, see where that leaves us now.

I hate all this negative blogging, it helps no one and it makes a very bad situation. All this deport them and send them home nonsense needs to stop. I am sure that for the most part, every belonger has an expat friend and vice versa. If they deport them all, then our friends are gone, our baby daddy is gone, our baby momma is gone, our church sister/brother is gone. Please stop all this negativity. Some of the coolest, nicest people I know are not BVI Nationals. There is good and bad where ever you go; if people break the rules/laws then they should suffer the consequences, whether they are nationals or expats. Let us be fair in our dealings, no mean blogs.
