Gov't, TRC discuss enforcement of standards for internet providers
The Premier made the statement today, July 14, 2020, during at update on the local financial services sector, where he noted that amidst the COVID-19 era, the sector continues to progress through the provision of scheduled services and use of online technology solutions.
"Whilst all that is good news, I am aware that many of you reported telecommunication related challenges whilst working remotely. Indeed, in order to successfully roll out many of the online solutions... we too relied heavily on our telecommunications sector," Premier Fahie said.
Decline in service quality expected - Premier
According to the Premier, whilst a decline in the quality of service would have been expected due to greater demands for internet, Hon Fahie indicated that government recognises 'well-intended criticisms and assertions' that the local telecommunications sector still has room for improvement.
"To this end, my Government has already discussed with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, amongst other things, the need to ramp up measuring and enforcing service level standards amongst our telecommunications service providers."
Currently, the VI's telecommunications services sector is dominated by three providers, Digicel, Flow and CCT Global Communications.
Hon Fahie indicated that due to COVID-19, regular meetings continue to be held at Cabinet level, with the aim of discussing matters pertaining to the success of the VI economy.
