‘Govt must write persons about residency application’ – Donald E. De Castro

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host Donald E. de Castro said that Government should do the decent thing and write persons who are seeking residency clearly setting out what the position with their application is.

Speaking on his Straight Talk radio show aired on Wednesday February 11, 2015 on ZBVI 780 AM, de Castro said that very often persons apply for residency in the Virgin Islands and they get no clear answer as to the position of their application.

He said that many times these applicants hear that their applications were misplaced or could not be found therefore could not be processed.

"The problem I have with our local government, present and past, is for years and years people have been applying for residency and there are so many reasons why they didn't get, [such as their applications were lost or misplaced],” he said.

“My honest opinion, and I hope that you agree with me, is that the Minister and the Cabinet who are directly responsible should have the decency to write to someone that applies for residency after they have checked their application, and say to them we are sorry, but at this time we cannot approve your application for residency. However you can reapply in 'x' amount of years,” he said.

Further, de Castro said that it is his understanding that persons who had neither belonger status nor residency were naturalized. He was referring to a ceremony held at the Governor’s Residence on February 5, 2015 where some 48 people were naturalized.

these application issues are most associated with applications submitted by our Caribbean brother and sisters(we cant buy the powers to be a new Volvo in exchange for a favour)....one white guy was given honorary belonger status by the former government and all he did was sail his boat to the BVI..we have persons in our BVI that still need permission to work after 30-years(these folk came here and help to develop the bvi as we know it today)...I finished school almost 40-years now and persons I know still need permits...I also know whites living here for far less years already holding belonger status; simply because of their financial influence over our elected officials(ting to talk, so run go talk it!!!!!)

The civil service deals with these matters. The civil service comes under the governor. So if you don't hear anything write direct to the governor. It works. I don't say you will get residence any quicker but at least you will get a response.

You are wrong here. The Governor's office cannot do anything when it comes to Residency and belonger status. Ask Ch..no Ja..o how he get residence, belonger status and naturalization in three years and he is in this country less than the required time to apply for status.

I didn't say the governor could do anything except goad the civil service into responding to applications or enquiries.

One can apply for bothBelonger and BOTC status one year after one gets residency, it is possible to get residence, belonger and naturalization in 3 yrs or 2. I got mine in less than 3yrs during VIP govt.
