ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Using the Zoom meeting platform, Government Ministers and students across various educational levels in the Virgin Islands (VI) completed the second in a series of online sessions to engage youths about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its challenges on education.

Present for the meeting on Sunday, May 24, 2020, was Ninth District Representative and Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), who reported that the online session for students across his District was a resounding success.

Honourable Wheatley’s Zoom event titled, “Our Children’s Experience; Hear from them how COVID-19 has affected their learning” has since drawn over 3,500 views so far and also saw attendance by Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) who co-hosted the event.

This was the second series, the first being for the Fifth District on April 13, 2020, hosted by Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5), and Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL), who discussed several matters under his portfolio.

Premier encouraged all to join in

In that session, students also had the privilege of engaging with Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) who called in to offer words of encouragement to the audience during the curfew lockdown period.

Premier Fahie encouraged persons from all districts to join in the conversations, "You do not have to be from the District that is hosting any particular session to join in because it is about connecting with people and getting the views and the feedback in,” he said.

Both discussions comprised students of all ages, and the sessions also provided an opportunity for parents, teachers and adults to join in about how the 'new regular' of online learning was affecting them and how it could be improved.

The key here is the welfare of our [B.V.I's] students/children. It does not matter if the Opposition or the Government communicates with them. At the end of the day, their safety and well being is paramount to Politics.

We are not in the sunshine yet though but so far we have been battling the storm remarkably well. The flight continues. The "fasten seat belt" sign is still on and may remain so for a long time yet, but I have all confidence in the aircraft and the man at the control. Bon, voyage!

When is the minister going to review the HLSCC Grading system.
That is what is demoralizing students more than covid.
It is foolhardy to think that students should only get an A if they score 100%.
