ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) has shifted it latest COVID-19 announcement to this morning, September 1, 2020, at 11:00 am, instead of the previously planned August 31, 2020, update.

The decision comes as the Territory has seen a sharp spike in COVID-19 cases, to 38 active cases in just a short couple of days to end the month of August.

Premier, Governor & Health Minister to present

Members of the public were on August 30, 2020, told by Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (AL) to be prepared for a possible 24/7 lockdown of the Territory for 14-days, pending cabinet approval.

This resulted in supermarkets and hardware stores flooded with customers on August 31, 2020.

Today’s announcement will feature Premier Fahie, Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) all presenting on the way forward for the Territory, according to a social media post from the Government Information Service.

While some Opposition legislators had suggested that the three had not presented COVID-19 updates as a group due to an alleged fight in Cabinet, Premier Fahie has since debunked those claims as misinformation and mischief.

Stream & Watch Live

The update will be live-streamed on the Facebook page of the Government of the Virgin Islands, and broadcast on Flow TV, CBN TV Channel 101 and CBN 90.9 FM.

Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) will keep you updated on key developments coming out of the announcement.

Honorable Fahie - you have said yourself - "But, there are those who have intentionally put us at risk by engaging in undesirable activities that have significantly contributed to the recent spike." - You know who they are, arrest them and charge them with crimes against the people of the BVI. Throw the full weight of the law at them and make sure that no one else ever feels that we can be messed with like this in future. Their arrogance and ignorance have endangered the whole territory. Enough - lock them up! And those who hold government jobs should be removed from their positions because they have deliberately failed to uphold the standards that we expect from our professional people.
