VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – Residents of the Virgin Gorda community have been urged to be the watch dogs for certain criminal activities allegedly being executed by vandals who have reportedly been targeting government facilities on the sister island.

While this call was made by Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn, several residents had brought this issue to the attention of Virgin Islands News Online, alleging that it is believed there are persons who are deliberately attacking and destroying certain government properties.

“We know some people don’t agree with how certain things going on here and they venting by destroying, and that’s criminal, its wasting tax payers dollars, they need to stop,” said a school teacher on the island. According to the teacher, she was heartbroken when she heard and later saw how someone or persons ‘mash-up’ certain sections in the $300,000 Walters Recreational Park.

Residents also alluded to several shutters of the partly enclosed Jeffery Caines Sports Arena being destroyed.

In addition, Hon Walwyn said, “We just finished resurfacing the basketball court in North Sound and I understand that somebody took their car and drive it on the wet cement, that is not good,” said Hon Walwyn.

Back in January of 2014, several persons had reported to Virgin Islands News Online that components of the Walters Recreational Park were being destroyed due to the poor handling and abuse of the facility. The reports had come from residents living on Virgin Gorda, and had highlighted what they feel is the absence of a proper management system of the recently opened park and that for the greater part, children are using the park unsupervised and causing damage especially to the decorative plants.

However, when contacted on January 15, 2014, Chairman of the BVI Recreational Trust Mr Roy E. Barry said investigations have proven the allegations to have been false. He said checks were made and there were no evidence of any such disturbances.

Additionally, Mr Barry had said that the day prior to the report hitting the m‎edia, the BVI Recreational Trust had taken steps to secure the entrance of the park by installing a chain at the entrance.

He had told this news site that it is the Trust's intention to install a more proper gate which they could not have done at that time.

its such a shame that we have to struggle with this crap at this day in age......so I am convinced its pure ignorance on the part of the people who should very well know better not to deface our community. In other countries there are hefty penalties for committing such acts.....so lets get the ball rolling with enforcing the same down here.

This is so sad. Are we becoming like some poor black slums in the U.S. where the people have no respect for anyone or anything? Do our people and our children simply not know any better?

I highly doubt either of those things. Therefore, these are indeed willful acts of destruction for the sake of destruction. I think parents of children caught doing damage should be made to pay for said damage and any adults doing damage should go to jail, pay for the damages and serve 30 days community service at the very place they were caught doing the damage.

We are NOT a nation of ignorant individuals, intent on destroying that which we have built. It's time for everyone to smarten up!

I don't know about the North Sound Basketball stuff but The windows were broken since last year, photos were taken and given to the contractors etc. I myself reported the issue...The culprit was identified by witnesses who chased him from the area. The same individual was also responsible for the damages to the bathrooms at the park. He allegedly suffers from "mental" issues. It is alleged that he was upset that "Myron giving all kinda people work and he ain't giving me none". My BIGGEST concern is why is the broken glass etc. NOW being reported? What is it supposed to "suggest" ?
