GREENLAND, Tortola, VI - Sailors from one of the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates, HMS Lancaster, will represent the Governor’s 11-member squad as they seek to find warm hospitality at the Greenland Recreation Ground against the BVI Cricket Association President’s eleven on Monday, July 1.

Sailors from one of the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates, HMS Lancaster, will represent the Governor’s 11-member squad as they seek to find warm hospitality at the Greenland Recreation Ground against the BVI Cricket Association President’s eleven on Monday, July 1.

Governor Boyd McCleary will lead his team onto the field and is expected to bowl an over or two at the home side which will be led by BVICA President, Mr. Shan Mohamed.

The exhibition game will take the Twenty/20 format and starts at 2:00 p.m.

Unsure of what to expect against the Navy, the BVICA President has compiled a squad that includes former Leeward Islands cricketer, Brent Defreitas, Maxford Pipe, Johnny Bailey, Richard Fredericks, Dennisford Brown, Kwesi St. Clair, Paul ‘on the ball’ Hewlett, Shane St. Clair, Collis Fraser, and Kevin Joseph.

“We expect a game that will be played in the true spirit of friendship against the visiting Navy team, We don’t know what to expect, but I believe we have assembled a team of quality players that are capable of representing the BVI well,” Mr. Mohamed stated.

HMS Lancaster will visit the island of Tortola on 30th June as part of her six-month deployment to the North Atlantic and Caribbean.

Lancaster, affectionately nicknamed ‘The Queen’s Frigate’ after her sponsor Her Majesty The Queen, will visit all six of the British Overseas Territories in the region as well as numerous Commonwealth and Caribbean countries in order to conduct regional defence engagement. These visits will provide the opportunity to train with other navies as well as demonstrate the Royal Navy’s continued commitment to the region.
